Large businesses are no more loyal to governments that give them money than they are to their employees. If you want a vibrant economy, make it possible for small and medium businesses to thrive and refuse to play the extortion game. If your battery plant, or call center, isn't viable without government subsidies, it isn't viable with them.

There is an exception to the law of demand (alongside Giffen goods or Veblen effects), often called “speculative demand,” “precautionary inventory demand,” or “hoarding under expected price rises.” It explains why supply shocks in oil/commodity markets cause sharper short-term spikes than pure inelasticity would predict.

This is the bear case on oil here. I don't agree with it, oil demand is very inelastic to short term price changes, but it is worth considering.

Oil at $150 or $200 isn't the no brainer it's made out to be. You have to think carefully about what's priced at $110. My best guess is that current levels price half of all oil out of the Gulf being permanently disrupted. So $150 or $200 are a stretch... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/how-high-wil…

There is an additional component to this and that is the anticipation of higher prices in the future. I will front load demand if I believe I will not be able receive oil in the future or I believe that I will have to pay more. It’s this effect that can spike prices much higher short term and conversely tank them when the crisis ends

Good chart but the reason it’s unrealistic has to do with your x axis starting point at 0.10 elasticity of demand and your article suggesting a high end elasticity of 0.20.
I would suggest in the short term (3-9mos) one can easily argue for demand elasticity of 0.05 or half your starting point.
Why oil demand is so inelastic in the short term?
1. Few immediate substitutes
•Transportation (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel) is heavily oil-dependent.
•Switching to EVs or alternative fuels takes years.
2. Capital lock-in
•Cars, trucks, planes, and industrial equipment are long-lived assets.
3. Economic necessity
•Oil is embedded in logistics, agriculture, and manufacturing
It would interesting to see your chart with a more realistic short term elasticity.

@kinsellawarren Trump fought like a cornered animal the entire campaign and the Democratic Party begged to run against Trump only to mail in their effort and fumble historically.
The question is how bad does it have to get for a lesson to be learned here.

You might have already noticed, but this is not your average Submariner.
The Rolex Submariner ref. 116659SABR is an off-menu, off-catalog Rolex - the kind of piece most collectors never even get the chance to see in person.
Crafted in 18K white gold, it takes the classic dive watch and turns it into a full gem-set statement with
• 36 blue sapphires + 12 diamonds on the bezel
• 92 brilliant-cut diamonds across the lugs and crown guards
• ~3.9 carats of sapphires and 1.7 carats of diamonds, all selected and set by Rolex’s in-house gemology team
But this isn’t just excess - it’s precision.
Rolex uses invisible setting techniques and meticulously matches each stone for color, tone, and clarity. Even the bezel is functional: the first 9 lighter sapphires mark the 15-minute dive interval, just like a standard Submariner.
Released quietly around 2018, never listed in catalogs, and produced in extremely small numbers, the SABR has become one of the most coveted modern Rolex “insider” pieces.
It's a Submariner taken to the absolute extreme.
