@ForTheSpiders Erythraeinae (Erythraeidae). Either Paraphanolophus or Erythraxus, and an undescribed species regardless. I’m revising these and would love specimens! Erythraxus, in particular, can get huge, well over an inch legspan, making them the largest of all mites.

@Theridula thoughts? This is from leaf litter in a cypress swamp in northern Jacksonville.

@marshalhedin Wow, awesome shot of an adult Leptus (Erythraeidae). Only one species has been described from west of the Rockies: L. californicus, described from a larval specimen from Mt. Hamilton in 1992. But there are many hundreds undescribed from the same area.

@HerbertNickel Many more than 20 species of you count the many mites utilizing these beetles as transportation!

Biodiversity in a single horse dung pile, at least 20 species. So many people demand promotion of #biodiversity, so few demand more support for farmers to let their animals out to the pasture. P.S.: Please don't forget the detrimental effects of anthelmintics. Foto: Gernot Kunz

@dadrummondart The chemical cocktail is complex & varies with subgroup. Cocktails of most species remain a mystery---what interesting compounds remain to be discovered there. All this and more makes me a fan of the underexplored organ--ozopore. Happy it's in your model :) 3/3

@dadrummondart another pedantically-laced correction is that spiders aren't poisonous, they're venomous, as though this substitution would solve the misconception. Except, Opiliones actually are poisonous! Large defensive glands emit strong-smelling chemicals from holes called ozopores. 2/n

Maybe mites would be as popular as beetles if they retained their color for more than a few hours. These were a whole rainbow of colors and patterns in life (granted I'm using ethanol because I don't have any Koenike) but once preserved they all turn the same plain orange-brown

@Mossworm1 AND from the same sample!! Cool to see such diversity in a single genus from a single stream. Thanks for sharing my research! 😊

This photo by Ray Fischer is of just one genus and doesn't even begin cover the huge variety of beautiful colors out there, bright blue with red spots and things like that

@JoVonnH @mrcjhoward Definitely a mite, and a mesostig at that (Mesostigmata: Gamasina). Many mesostigs are ant assiciates. But this one reminds me of a common soil predator stuck to the ant—something about the way those front legs are unnaturally bent. But I wouldn’t be surprised either way.
