Last week, I was inspired by a @jessepollak post about @base's "Just Build It" ethos and pitched an idea to my team @shillr 🧵 ("New Based City" by @yonfrula, minting now on Base via @ourZORA & @floor & @farcaster_xyz) See, we deeply believe in the empowerment L2's will and do provide the onchain culture garden that is web3 and wanted our favourites - @arbitrum & Base, to be a part of our NYC event series. But it felt kinda lame to ask for money for signage 😪 So, instead of asking Base or @arbitrum for a sponsorship I thought, "Why don't I just find a creative way to use each L2 and fund an unofficial sponsorship for them? Maybe a contest would be fun, and a meme...oh Brian Armkong would slap...hmmm, alright we're cooking" My team and a couple close friends (shoutout @DeeZe, @redbeardnft & @JNSilva_ for some sage advice) loved the idea and the SHILLR team was down. I hit up some of my favourite artists that have made strong efforts to build & create on L2's, pitched them the general meme concept and we were off to the races. ("Size World" by @creatureworld, minting now on Arbitrum via Zora & Floor) Right now there's a friendly "Uncompetition" between Base & Arbitrum...whichever OE gets the most mints in 48 hours gets the (unofficial) Headline Sponsorship title at our 3 day event series at NFT NYC 🗽 We're splitting the "free mint" creator fee 50:50 with the artists. With our portion of the revenue we're putting on additional activations for Base & Arbitrum creators & builders, covering event costs, and at certain milestones we'll fly artists out to NYC that have minted on Base & Arb but wouldn't have otherwise have been able to make it. They'll be given comped hotel fees, dedicated art exhibition time & we'll record video interviews so the world can better hear their story and how L2's in particular impacted their Web3 journey. Regardless of which chain gets the most mints, everyone wins. Creators get paid, both chains get celebrated and receive partner titles and additional exhibitions & branding at our event series, and we aren't down horrendous on trying to do it all ourselves lol. Importantly too - we don't have to wait for approval, submit a deck or hop into a line with a million others asking Jesse, @brian_armstrong & @SizeChad + @offchain if their orgs can pay us directly. Now, I have no idea how this will go, and I don't think there are many if any reference points to draw comparison on historically. What I do know is that I'm excited, and grateful to both be & build in an industry where the rails for creativity are embedded into the substrate of the tech our culture exists on and bounded only by our imagination and ability to execute as both an individual and within a collective. Maybe we do it differently next time. Maybe this works out great. However it goes, when these mints close the SHILLR team and the incredible artists involved will be able to say that their creativity size is Size and that our execution is Based and early.
