One of the most important ways we can improve outcomes for those struggling with #mentalillness is by supporting entrepreneurs in getting breakthroughs, such as the @OneMindOrg Accelerator, into the hands of the people that need them faster. buff.ly/3EjZmXu

(1/3) We just had an energizing few days in D.C. talking about policy change with @IAmInseparable at their strategy summit, and meeting with elected officials and staff on Capitol Hill.

“‘Recovery? It’s the three Ps. It’s people, place and purpose.’ He was describing the road map to a full and meaningful life. And the road to recovery, to these three Ps, does not run simply through clinics and hospitals.” In Healing, by Thomas Insel @thomasinselmd

Homeless individuals with mental illness can be forced down the path of food insecurity. Access to food and shelter is a human right. Combine meeting these basic needs with mental health services, and we can improve this community's health and well-being. #HHWeek

#ATLANTA folks: want to come to a really great in-person book event on Tuesday night that's NOT about the #Midterms? I'm going to be at the @CarterCenter interviewing the super-compelling Dr. Thomas Insel about his book Healing: Our Path from Mental Illness to #MentalHealth.

Once again, in 2021, more service members died by suicide than any other cause. We've lost more service members to suicide than combat every year since 2011. On #VeteransDay, we need to honor all who have served.

This NYT letter to the editor caught my attention. Ann's right. What we are doing now is not sustainable. Funding recovery needs to be a top priority so community-based services can thrive. @VannaHealth is creating innovative funding mechanisms for recovery for people with SMI.

Is the difference because men are struggling more, or are they more likely to use lethal means like firearms? The CDC data show that men are more likely to use firearms when they are #suicidal.

Does less sleep result in worse mental health? While correlation is not causation, CDC data suggest a growing problem with both sleep and #mentalhealth in youth.

@DeborahGeesling Great points, esp about need to include families. There is no magic bullet. Peers, coaches, clubhouses, ACT teams, families are all part of the team needed. Vanna Health is trying to bring these services together so they can be paid for as recovery care.

Families are intimidated, forced to choose between shelters for their loved ones or accept dangerous housing options that put them at risk for sexual exploitation & drugs. People hiding behind insurance desks make decisions every day out of $elf interest. Enough. End/

With respect for Dr. Insel, some follow up thoughts. Our state does pay for peer services. More on that in thread below. Dr. Insel (may be?) naively parroting what he hears from inside the behavioral health industrial complex. 1/ #SMITwitter

The economic cost of schizophrenia in the US was an estimated $343.2 billion in 2019, double the cost in 2013. Yes, schizophrenia is expensive, and yet we are still not paying for recovery services like clubhouses and peer support. Investing in recovery will reduce the cost.
