After Labor Day, water levels at Lake Accotink will be lowered for a dam assessment. The marina & dam area will be fenced off for your safety. The evaluation is expected to be complete this fall, but restoring lake water levels may take longer. bit.ly/3HXu6mJ
🚨 Flooding: Know Your Risk. Get Warned. Have a Plan.
The devastating flash floods in Texas are a sobering reminder:
Everyone — individuals, businesses, institutions — must be prepared. This is a responsibility that should be taken seriously.
The D.C. and Baltimore region is no stranger to deadly flooding, especially near waterways (rivers, creeks, streams), urban areas with poor drainage and in the mountains.
The guidance below applies anywhere flooding in the United States may occur.
🔎 1. KNOW YOUR RISK
You should know if you're in a flood zone. There are many resources for finding this out:
FEMA flood maps: floodsmart.gov/flood-zones-an…
First Street Foundation offers free risk tools: firststreet.org
Your county website may have flood risk info.
Know your risk not only at home, but also where you vacation or travel (e.g., Airbnbs in the mountains, coastal rentals, campgrounds).
If you operate a business or organization where people congregate, it’s your responsibility to know your property's flood risk — and inform your visitors/customers.
📢 2. GET WARNED
Have multiple ways to receive flood and severe weather alerts:
📱 Ensure Wireless Emergency Alerts are turned on
📻 Own a NOAA Weather Radio — critical in areas with weak cell service. They are inexpensive and easy to purchase online.
If you run a camp or outdoor program, receiving timely warnings is essential - not just for floods but also severe thunderstorms.
🗺️ 3. HAVE A PLAN
Monitor weather forecasts. If a flood watch is issued, be ready to move fast if a warning follows.
Identify escape routes and know how to reach higher ground
Prepare a go-bag with essentials
If you’re responsible for others, communicate and rehearse your plan
🚗 Never attempt to drive through flooded roads.
Water can rise faster and deeper than you expect.
Turn around. Don’t drown.
💡 Floods kill dozens every year — and most deaths are preventable.
Weather forecasts and warnings aren't perfect but have advanced to the point that there is lead time for most life-threatening situations.
Know Your Risk. Get Warned. Have a Plan.

Former NOAA Administrator Richard Spinrad: "I am convinced that the staff cuts that we saw were a contributing factor to the inability of the emergency managers to respond."
Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.

Trump’s Easter message fused holiday wishes with rage and accusation—an eruption of grievance cloaked as greeting. Critics note this pattern: his insults often mirror his own legal peril. Indicted for a coup, espionage, and fraud, his attacks read like confessionals.
@CoachLosP FCPS is not only responsible for buses conveying athletes but is ethically responsible for student drivers attending games. Some student drivers are not highly skilled in wintertime techniques and do not always exercise mature judgment.
@CoachLosP Typically, Fairfax County has widely different conditions from one end of the county to another. Decisions need to focus on the most severe situation, which may puzzle people in milder areas.
@CoachLosP I understand and sympathize with your reaction 100 %. I have often been a strong critic of FCPS weather-related decisions.
But a snow burst such as the one on Friday can rapidly dump unanticipated amounts of snow.
