Yes. I agree with you and Theo. However, @NASA's role is to provide the vision that inspires the funding. The Planetary Science Division did a great job of creating a compelling vision and getting funding. The Manned Spaceflight Programs group settled into decades of repetitive Shuttle launches without a vision that motivated the American people or Congress to provide funding. That's how I saw things.

@ThomasRGreer @astro_jaz Replace "NASA" with Congress and/or politicians in general and your statement would be a lot truer. NASA does whatever Congress tells them to do with money that Congress allocates. They don't control their own destiny.

@peterrhague That's a huge record to beat! However, F9 booster is a first stage, and that's arguably easier to land than a spaceship that's coming back from orbit. How long do you think it will it be before a (Starship) Ship matches Discovery's record?

For starters, USA law prohibits states from negotiating with foreign countries. That's strictly limited to our federal government. And that's an example of why California is strongly disliked by many Americans. They disrespect traditional American values and act as if they are above the law.

@JesperAdolf @KatieMiller I think SpaceX learned a lot. By removing tiles from various places and still surviving reentry, the tiles obviously work. Starting with Flight 12, the new tiles and process for mounting them make the heat shield appear much tighter and cleaner. We will soon find out.

@JesperAdolf @KatieMiller SpaceX has intentionally kept test flights a few mph short of orbital velocities while they test the second stage (things like heat tiles). They can go orbital any time they choose. But you knew that.

I'm calling for Thune to resign immediately! Thune remains in the 1980s & 90s. He doesn't understand that only Fetterman is a Democrat. The rest of them are radical Socialists in training to become radical Marxists.
America Army@AmericaStan_

🚨 Senate Leader John Thune is under heavy pressure to end the recess and immediately call senators back, so the DHS and ICE funding bill can be passed and sent to President Trump. Do you fully support Trump on this issue ? A. Absolutely Yes B. No

President Trump has the power to convene the Senate under Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution “on extraordinary Occasions.” If a department with 260,000 employees (DHS) going unfunded isn’t an “extraordinary occasion”—especially while the Senate is out on a two-week recess during that shutdown with no plans to resolve the impasse beyond “we’ll deal with that in two weeks”—I don’t know what is.
Mike Lee@BasedMikeLee

Waiting for a deal to materialize with Chuck Schumer applies no pressure on Senate Democrats to fund DHS Interrupting their recess and forcing them to debate DHS funding on the Senate floor *would* apply pressure We can’t reward unprecedented obstruction with two-week recesses

The difference is that Artemis 2 will be traveling too fast to enter the Moon's gravity well. It will not orbit the moon. Yes, it will be subject to lunar gravity and its trajectory will be modified accordingly. However, the rocket will never leave the earth's gravity well and, even if it misses the slingshot maneuver, it will will not float away forever. It will will continue in a highly elliptical earth orbit, returning to the Earth in a week or so (perhaps less, depending on the exact parameters of the miss).

@ThomasRGreer @Erdayastronaut @rpuffinstuff2 There is no earth orbit that just "flies by the moon." To orbit a planet, you have to remain in its gravitational influence. To get to the moon, you leave Earth's gravitational influence, enter the moon's gravitational influence and use that to slingshot you back toward Earth.

I'm honestly SHOCKED at how the general public has NO IDEA Artemis II is taking humans out to the moon and will be the furthest humans have ever flown. Every non-space nerd I've talked to has no idea. WE GOTTA GET PEOPLE STOKED!!!! THESE FOUR HUMANS ARE FLYING TO THE MOON!!!

@801formal_llama @rln_nelson @ChrisMartzWX @nudawaya Isn't it interesting that all the data adjustments, regardless of the country, always favor the climate alarmists? The historical temperatures are adjusted down and recent temperatures are adjusted up. Kinda strange how that works out?

@rln_nelson @ThomasRGreer @ChrisMartzWX @nudawaya Because there might be good reasons the data you're apparently tracking is being "altered". Data is often altered when new information is discovered and expertise is what allows a person to determine that.

There is no “climate crisis.” You have provided no evidence of one. It’s a fairytale being used as a vehicle to get very specific policies enacted into law and enforced. It’s rooted in anti-capitalist and anti-energy ideology.

Lunar orbit is incorrect. They will technically be in a very high earth orbit, higher than the moon. They will zip by at high speed. Orbiting the moon would require them to show down enough to be captured by lunar gravity. Then they would need to increase their speed to escape the moon. Artemis 2 lacks the Delta-V required for lunar orbit.

Yes. Apollo 8 and 10 both orbited the moon. Both were rehearsals for a real lunar landing, which occurred on Apollo 11. But Artemis 2 won't be orbiting the moon. Instead, it will simply fly a high enough earth obit to fly by the moon. The mission won't be a dress rehearsal for a lunar landing.

@rpuffinstuff2 So Apollo 8 and 10 didn't go to the moon then? I'd strongly argue that's a misrepresentation of what happened.

Artemis 2 is overhyped. Non-space nerd: "Flying to the moon? Great! When do they land?" Space nerd: "They aren't landing this time." "Next time?" "No. Not until Artemis 4." "Oh... Well, how many times are they going to orbit the moon?" "Well, they aren't going to orbit the moon. They are just flying by and returning. "Why aren't they going to orbit the moon?" "Not enough Delta-V." "What?"
