Robert Taylor and Vivien Leigh starred together in Waterloo Bridge (1940). Without giving away the plot, it’s one of the saddest classic films I’ve ever seen. Taylor and Leigh also worked together in A Yank at Oxford (1938).

SOUTH CAROLINA SCGOP GETTING SUED Danny Lee Ford II (son of legendary Clemson coach Danny Ford) is suing the South Carolina Republican Party to force his way onto the Aug. 11 special GOP primary ballot for U.S. Senate. He’s the Upstate farmer who just lost the June 23 GOP runoff for Agriculture Commissioner to Trump-endorsed Cody Simpson (Ford still pulled more than 160,000 votes). After that loss he jumped into the special Senate race in the final hours of filing (July 28) to replace the late Lindsey Graham, arguing he knows South Carolina’s No. 1 industry (agribusiness) better than anyone else in the field and that “food security is national security.” The SCGOP, under Chairman Drew McKissick, refused to certify him. The party’s rules, amended at the June 27, 2026 state convention and effective July 1, require any candidate seeking Republican nomination for federal office to have voted in at least two of the last three statewide GOP primaries (or receive a waiver from the State Executive Committee). Ford has acknowledged he hadn’t voted in enough prior primaries because he was busy running the family farm, he hoped for a waiver and didn’t get one. Same rule also disqualified Darius Mitchell (the self-described “hip-hop Republican” who finished fifth in the June primary against Graham). A third candidate, Clark Neilson, was barred because he is not a bona fide South Carolina resident or registered SC voter. That left nine candidates on the ballot, including interim Sen. Darline Graham (Lindsey’s sister), Rep. Ralph Norman, Businessman Mark Lynch Rep. Russell Fry, former Gov. Mark Sanford, and others. Ford’s attorney is state Sen. Brad Hutto (D-Orangeburg), the long-serving Senate Minority Leader and a trial lawyer with the firm Williams & Williams. A Democrat is now the lawyer trying to put a Republican farmer who just ran as a Republican back on a Republican primary ballot that the party deliberately tightened to keep non-Republicans out. The special primary is Aug. 11 (early voting starts Aug. 5), with a possible runoff Aug. 25, to choose the Republican nominee for the November general election against Democrat Annie Andrews.

Mrs. Parkington (1944, directed by Tay Garnett) was the fourth of eight movies pairing Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon together. A film couple who deserves to me mentioned alongside the all-time great screen couples yet.. truth be told... seldom is. If we're being completely honest, neither star receives the recognition they deserve. I'm not sure why, but I suspect it's because their films (while completely wonderful) often fly beneath the radar of films currently shown and celebrated.
