Trump Demands Criminal Charges Against Judge Who Blocked Kennedy Center Renovation By Cassandra MacDonald, The Gateway Pundit President Donald Trump sharply criticized Obama-appointed federal judge Christopher Cooper after he blocked plans to rename and temporarily close the John F. Kennedy Center for a major renovation project. Judge Cooper ruled that the Kennedy Center board lacked the authority to rename the institution after Trump and ordered his name removed from the building, website, and official materials. He also concluded that renovations could proceed without a full shutdown. In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump argued that the decision endangered public safety and halted a project that would have transformed what he described as a deteriorating facility with aging infrastructure, corroded pipes, failing HVAC systems, and structural problems. "You cannot replace structural beams and carry out dangerous construction while audiences are attending performances," Trump wrote, insisting that a temporary closure was necessary. Trump then accused Cooper of having a serious conflict of interest due to the political and professional activities of his wife, Amy Jeffress, a former federal prosecutor and attorney with ties to Democratic legal circles. According to Trump, Jeffress has been connected to figures and investigations he has long criticized, including former Attorney General Eric Holder, the January 6 Committee, the Hillary Clinton email investigation, and legal matters involving President Joe Biden. Trump also noted that Jeffress works at the same law firm that represented E. Jean Carroll in her civil case against him. "It is impossible for me to receive fair treatment from this judge," Trump stated, adding that Cooper should face consequences for allegedly failing to disclose the conflict. Earlier this year, the Kennedy Center board voted to rename the institution in Trump's honor and approved a $250 million renovation project scheduled to begin in July 2026. Supporters of the plan cited engineering reports describing deteriorating structural components, failing mechanical systems, pest infestations, and other safety concerns. They argued that a complete shutdown was required to carry out the work safely. In a 94-page ruling, however, Cooper rejected those arguments, calling the board's decision poorly supported and ruling that renovations could be completed in phases. He also stated that only Congress has the authority to change the center's official name under federal law.
