@spurzumaki I agree, but they’re also average at offensive rebounding and don’t force turnovers. Minnesota has shooters and several guys who are lethal from the midrange. That’s why Minnesota always seems to exceed expectation in the playoffs. They can play in so many different ways.

@TimGarrisonMN at the same time the Spurs are far better defensively than the Nuggets. Wolves aren't just getting free runs at the basket anymore

If the Timberwolves can get healthy, they’re going to bring a level of physicality, defense, and shot making that’s going to test the limit of these young Spurs. If the Wolves play anything like they did defensively against the Nuggets, it’s going to be a real wake up call for San Antonio. Maybe it takes a quarter to adjust, but what if it takes a few games. Minnesota has to make San Antonio uncomfortable. Fox is a key matchup. Quick guards have been the bane of the Timberwolves defense for some time. If they limit Fox, Minnesota could quickly overwhelm the Spurs. If Fox and win his matchup, it’s going to suck the wind out of the Wolves’ vaunted defense, and the Spurs will be able to get into their offense and get the ball to their guys in familiar spots. Minnesota just has to turn it into a rock fight and lean into the tough shot making they have in Julius and Jaden from the midrange. Anthony Edwards and Ayo Dosunmu will be problems once they return to the lineup as well. This is a perfect test for the Spurs. Let’s see if they’re ready for the task.
Tim Bontemps@TimBontemps

If Anthony Edwards and Ayo Dosunmu can play in Game 1 for Minnesota, that's a game-changer. Still obviously an uphill climb to beat San Antonio, but that would at least give the Wolves a puncher's chance. Massive update that both guys are questionable.

I agree. I think the Wolves are actually build to do exactly that. They are very comfortable from deep and the midrange. I watched a ton of that series and I thought Portland got 3/4ths the way but had way too many mental mistakes. Plus when you get continually scored on the effort drops off defensively. Make no mistake, Minnesota is going to be a souped up and veteran version of what you saw in Portland.

@TimGarrisonMN Its gonna take more than physicality; Portland tried that for 5 games and the Spurs punched back in every game so they’re ready for physicality. They’re gonna have to hit outside shots consistently.

@bighoss_shawn Also as two guys who can shoot from deep and the midrange. You know the Spurs will pack the paint after watching that Denver film.

I firmly believe this to be a pivotal series in the career of De’Aaron Fox. Minnesota has struggled with small, quick guards for some time. It’s not typically Jaden McDaniels’ forte. That said, he’s a different animal in the playoffs. The last example of a quick guard in the postseason was Kyrie Irving. Across 93 possessions Jaden held Kyrie to 6/14 shooting from the floor and 4 turnovers. Fairly good work. This postseason it was Toumani Camara that had success on Fox, holding him to 5/19 shooting from the floor with 4 turnovers across 107 possessions. So while there is a prevailing narrative from the regular season that Jaden struggles with small guards, maybe some playoff physicality and want to helps keep him in front of Fox. Either way, Fox should test this matchup early and often. It could be a great pathway to opening up the rest of their offense against what will be the most physical and imposing defense this young Spurs team has faced to date. This exact situation is why you go bring in a veteran PG to compliment a young and upcoming group of talent. Let’s see if it pays off.

The thing is… if actually straight up pick the Wolves if they were healthy. I think they can match talent because if the last round proved anything, it’s that Minnesota’s regular season means nothing. What I’m looking for is if Minnesota can shock the Spurs in game 1 with their physicality and steal a game because of it. Then maybe Ant gets back in game 2 and now you head home 1-1 with a healthy team. That’s where the Timberwolves can have a real chance to win. If the physicality piece wears off after a half though and Fox is running wild… uh oh. Time for some golf.

@TimGarrisonMN We agree on a lot, Minnesota is definitely going to have to make it ugly to win the series SA has the talent advantage, but we’ve seen more experienced teams take out more talented team in the playoffs before by making it ugly

Yeah, Vassell isn’t someone you want left alone to get cooking either, but I do think you start with Jaden on Fox and see what happens. If it goes bad and you have to punt game 1 and re-adjust, so be it. But yeah, if Fox can break the POA defense consistently that’s where I think the Spurs end up taking care of business in 5 or 6. If you’re Minnesota, I think you see a pathway to containing Fox and forcing the Spurs to settle. That’s where they can turn games into rock fights and that’s where I see a pathway for Minnesota to win in 6.

@TimGarrisonMN Definitely interested to see where McDaniels goes this series Could Fox, teams have also had success using smaller defenders on Wemby and being physical so wondering if we see that at all

I’ve watched the spurs extensively, and it’s why I think their main guys are going to struggle with the Timberwolves physicality and defense. They can mix up so many different coverages to confuse Wemby and have the physicality and athleticism to pick up at half court. Fox is pivotal. Why? Because he’s the outlet and the one bad matchup that can relieve some pressure. If he can break contain at the point of attack, then the Spurs have a bankable way to get into their offense. Otherwise I think the Spurs will be forced to settle quite a bit if they can’t get penetration into the paint. Wemby is still prone to settling too. That’s where the Wolves can turn it into a rock fight, and that’s exactly where the Spurs don’t want to go.

The money line for Wolves-Spurs has Minnesota as far too heavy of an underdog to not place a small bet for Wolves in 6.

At the start of this season, I would agree with you. I love watching Makar, and I didn’t have much faith in the Wild at the start of the year so I actually think watched quite a bit of the Avs. I’ve been mesmerized by McKinnon since that 2014 series against the Wild. Watching Quinn up close and personal has been truly remarkable. He tilts the ice so heavily in favor of the Wild, and it covers up so many gaps. It’s a different style to Makar, but I think it’s every bit as impactful. So yeah, I think he’s got a case. I think they’re neck and neck, it’s just a matter of what style you like better. Honestly man, I understand you questioning me saying best in the world as Makar has a hell of a case, but to dismiss the conversation all together just exposes your homerism.

My stab at this list (same guys): 1.) Anthony Edwards 2.) Quinn Hughes 3.) Kirill Kaprizov 4.) Justin Jefferson 5.) Matt Boldy 6.) Rudy Gobert 7.) Brock Faber 8.) Jaden McDaniels 9.) Byron Buxton 10.) Eriksson Ek Ant is the lead guy on a team coming off back to back WCF, and is quickly becoming a global icon. Hughes is a worth challenger, but until the Wild have the same run of success or a title it’s hard to justify him over the monster than is Ant. Jaden has a chance to quickly rise these rankings in the coming days with Ant out.

@TimGarrisonMN Same! I’m just joining the banter for the fun of it, sucks the nuggets lost but based on what I saw from the nuggets all year, I had no belief they would do much in the playoffs. Just didn’t look like a championship team

The way Quinn Hughes controls the game is so unique. I legitimately don’t believe there is a gap. I think Quinn has built a legitimate case for the throne over the last few months. We’re not going to change each others minds. Let’s see what actually happens on the ice over the next two weeks
