@NicholasTyrone Being charitable - I think that many don’t actually know what to do or what went wrong in particular 2019-24. Unless you understand the problem a solution is difficult.

@TimHall246181 The upper echelons of the Conservative Party remain far, far too complacent about what is happening. That’s the problem.

If the Tories lose anywhere north of 500 seats in England on May 7th, that should have them panicking. But it’s already obvious they will just shrug it off and insist they are on track to win the next general election, even if they lose 1,000.

@NicholasTyrone I think Reform will gain lots of seats - partly as they were not contesting pre-2025. What I think the polling is showing is that there is less of a gap between all the parties.

If Reform pick up 1,500+ local seats on May 7th, how will the "Reform have peaked" crowd cope? If I had to guess, they'll just pretend like it never happened.

@PritaniDan @OurJeeBee But for several centuries the Indian Government and India Office lead on UK involvement in the Persian Gulf & Arabia. Partly as it was much closer to India.

Former FCO head Lord McDonald on BBC R4 "...the rules of decolonisation were that the whole unit should become independent as one new country." He's just made that up. British India was split into multiple states on independence. Other territories have also been split.

@samueljenkinson It felt to me like a core David Cameron strategy onwards - automatic opposition. Whatever 'they' say or do, it's wrong (even if you have no alternative). The US takes that to the extreme though; if one side is wrong, that must mean the reactionary opposite is the direction to go.

He is correct and this ultimately comes down to the polarisation in US politics which now splits on which parts of the world are good or bad. If one side thinks x, the other will disagree. There’s no objectivity beyond “if they think it, it must be bad”.
BBC Radio 4 Today@BBCr4today

"I think we do have to rethink the idea that the US a reliable, trustworthy ally which we can depend in the longer term." Lord Ricketts, former National Security Advisor, says we should 'forget' the UK-US special relationship because it is a 'transactional relationship.'

I don’t think enough people acknowledge just how difficult it will be for the Tories to form any kind of electoral coalition beyond the Home Counties. They betrayed and abandoned the Red Wall, suburbia was lost after Brexit and cities are no go for Tories.
Christopher Howarth@CJCHowarth

And to think a Tory candidate nearly won in Houghton and Sunderland South in thr 2019 election! Now its Zero seats. x.com/LeftieStats/st…

It's hard to say this without sounding like a psychopath but I think we all need to see things dying more instead of having it be swept away to the margins of society.

There is this mindset that, because something is killed by the Approved Channels™, is it therefore painless and guiltfree meanwhile every other method is pure barbarism. You see this a lot with people thinking shooting and hunting is magnitudes worse than the slaughterhouse

I would take the Tories a bit more seriously if they expelled Liz Truss. She is a total whacko, falling ever further down the rabbit hole of conspiracy nuttery, and she belongs in the Reform Party or with that arse Rupert Lowe and his clown show. Go on @KemiBadenoch - lead.

@CraigLiddell7 As far as I can see, it no longer expands my network. I haven’t made new friends through politics in years, but it can certainly fracture existing friendships and bleakens my worldview. I also don’t want to be seen as tribal or cynical by people I respect

@NicholasTyrone I don’t see how you as an intelligent observer can predict something that far out in a very volatile political world. Your general analysis is always good. But your contentions that the Conservatives are dead as a party seems slightly mistaken.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Conservatives cannot win the next general election. In fact, I doubt they will end up with more than 50 seats, at best.

🚨NEW: @MayorofLondon calls in planning application for 283 new homes next to High Barnet Tube Station. 🏘️If approved, the plans will turn the station’s car park into five tower blocks. 100 of the new homes will be affordable.
