@wasserstein_rao IMO, it's a culture issue - the culture around Lab Automation grew up very differently than the culture around Open Source. But how to shift the culture?

It's interesting that liquid handling robots + programmatic interfaces + custom hardware integrations are such powerful engines for discovery platforms but there's almost no public guides or documentation on how to use them

@wasserstein_rao Somewhere along the way, programming automation got cast as a workflow management problem, and its tools became workflow management applications instead of IDEs. I agree - it's totally limiting!

Working on some robot code with decently complicated state management and just finding it unbelievable that 99% of people in industry write this code with drag and drop GUIs, how is that even possible

@MWayneDavis1 Yup thats likely the best way forward. A momentary disconnect from uni wifi but an airgapped and futureproof interface. :)

I'm at a crossroads and need your help. Should my lab devices be completely offline or run a Bluetooth app on your phone to connect to them? The app would be to turn on, ping, and view data in progress. Offline would mean all data on microSD card and cant see until end of exp.

@dr_alphalyrae @kevinswiber @nhuntwalker Cosigned - especially on graphs. Everything got a lot faster for me when I realized I don't care about "the fundamentals" of the Matplotlib library, and just started seeing if I could get copilot to give me a chart that looks aright.

@kevinswiber @nhuntwalker copilot is great if you don’t code daily as a job function but need to use code sporadically for querying data or making graphs or doing statistics

Confession: I’ve never used GitHub Copilot. I don’t know a single junior dev who hasn’t, though. Am I just getting old? Most of the time, I don’t even know my coding approach until I start writing it, and then it evolves in real-time.

Please share - what companies do you like for outsourcing next-gen sequencing? Just standard short-read sequencing. We plan to do low-pass WGS for dozens to hundreds of samples, and we're looking to keep it as cost-effective as possible.
