@karenvaites @JillFilipovic I don't love it, but in our school they do most of their work off-tablet and use lexia for like an 30 mins or an hour maybe? I think it helps teachers spend some one-on-one time with kids who need extra help while others are still learning.

Believe it or not, school district administrators are at the top of the list. Many have Gone Technocrat, and believe that tech-enabled assessments, in particular, give them eyes into classrooms and enable more personalized, smarter teaching. It’s misguided. But so are many beliefs in K-12 education (witness the stubborn rootedness of Whole Language philosophies).

@thornt25628 But I think it's also possible a 15 yo didn't know how to handle something like that, buried it, and the details (other than the trauma of it) are lost to time. CBF's actions and testimony don't suggest to me someone who is obviously lying. Ultimately, we'll probably never know.

@thornt25628 If CBF did this, I agree it would be problematic. But I haven't seen Keyser directly accuse her. Bigger picture, I do think Keyser's more recent statements are relevant evidence against Ford, and matter. It's certainly possible CBF made it up or got the person mixed up.

Good tweet about a controversial issue. I'd put it higher than 30%. But the basic points are: 1. Drunk teens do bad things to impress friends, and grow out of that to become good adults. 2. You can't admit to (1) given modern politics. 3. Democrats got desperate and elevated crazies.
Wilfred Reilly@wil_da_beast630

This was one of the craziest modern-era stories/scandals. I still think there's at least a 20-30% chance Ford was telling the truth - 80s-90s HS and college parties were WILD. But remember the other allegations about rape gangs and fights on boats and such? These scum threw the whole chamber pot at the boy, missed, and just yelled "BELIEVE ALL WOMEN" and moved on.

@GasLightingLNG We assess others' credibility all the time based on their incentives, actions, speech, etc. Compare her for instance to Sweetnik, who had tons of legal disputes in her past, hired Avenatti, and whose allegations were over the top.

@Tim_Joyce_86 I’m thoroughly confused on how to find a story credible when the story has no evidence. What information did you find credible? Just her “feels”?

@GasLightingLNG I'm not saying he should be convicted; the lack of corroborating evidence is obv. a problem. But I found her story to be plausible and thought she came across well. It seems perfectly possible to me that a generally good adult could do something really bad as a drunk teenager.

@Tim_Joyce_86 @dilanesper She would have had to bury it very effectively and immediately to not show any signs of distress because her best friend at a 6 person party didn't notice. BTW, CBF and friends threatened to reveal embarrasing personal details about Kaiser if she didn't change her story.

@thornt25628 @dilanesper I guess it doesn't surprise me that a 15 yo in the 80s might process something like that by burying it. I have no skin in the game and think Kav is a good justice. But I also found CBF credible. Am I sure? Of course not. But I think there's a decent chance she's being truthful.

@Tim_Joyce_86 @dilanesper CBF claimed to experience a tramatic assault that caused her to need therapy but somehow had no memory of any details that can be cross examined. She also had zero contemporaneous evidence (even a friend who said that she remembered being told). Should this have derailed the nom?

@thornt25628 @dilanesper I remember people making a lot of that, but I don't remember much about the logistics from 20-year-old parties, even if I definitely remember what happened at some of them. I remember reading a lot about it at the time and thinking she seemed pretty credible.

@Tim_Joyce_86 @dilanesper CBF had no recollection of how she got to/from the party, where it was, or the year. She cited her friend, Leyland Keiser, who said she never went to a party as Ford described or even met Kav. Keiser also said she felt pressured by CBF's friends to change her statement.

@dilanesper No opinion on their marriage, because it's not my business. But my issue w/ this take is that cheating definitionally means your partner isn't okay with it. So doing it anyway is a breach of trust and shows a lack of respect for them. Those are serious problems in a relationship!

i swear to you-- i know you guys learned from when you were a kid "cheating is wrong" but objectively, this is a terrible value system and "not worrying about the cheating and keeping your family together" is a much better value system!

it's really amazing to me that people's values are so screwed up that they think "pleasurably rubs skin against another person" is more important than "she is the mother of my children" or any of the other things she might bring to a relationship.
Jon Root@JonnyRoot_

I have no idea how Dianna Russini’s husband can stand her after cheating on him (reportedly) throughout their entirety of their marriage, disrespecting him on national TV/podcasts for years, & lying about her resort getaway with Vrabel…

@adub01488424 @SeanTrende Personally, I don't love invalidating a major referendum based on what most people will view as a technicality. But it sounds from Sean like they are more rule focused than outcome focused, and I think they make a solid case in the opinion that the rules weren't followed.

@JillFilipovic I agree real world > screens. But parenting is hard, every kid is different, and the details matter. Think about how hard breastfeeding is for some women, and how quick people are to judge if you don't. There is too much shaming of parents (esp. moms), and we shouldn't add to it.

Parenting is hard etc but I’m sorry if you’re allowing your toddler 2-3 hours of screen time per day you actually are failing them and you’re failing as a parent. This past week I saw at least a dozen toddlers running around with devices, some with phones clipped to their strollers(!). Your toddler has only been in the world for a short time. It’s still very interesting to them if you let them look up at it.
Camus@newstart_2024

Brain scans are revealing early dementia-like changes in kids and teens from heavy screen use. 60 Minutes Australia reported toddlers spending just 2–3 hours daily on devices already show abnormal white matter development. Teens averaging 6–8 hours display widened brain ridges and thinning in key areas — patterns that mirror early Alzheimer’s. Excessive screens appear to weaken neural pathways that normally strengthen through real-world movement, play, and face-to-face interaction. We’re also seeing the first IQ drops in recorded history, plus a nearly 400% rise in early-onset dementia signs among 35–44 year olds. Correlation, not proven causation — but devices are the major new variable. This is one of those reports that makes you rethink default habits. The convenience of screens is undeniable, but the potential long-term brain impacts on developing kids are hard to ignore. We may be unintentionally running a massive experiment on the next generation’s cognitive health. Are we underestimating the risks of heavy screen time, or is this concern overblown?

@lxeagle17 @jonfavs Amen! Also, I don't like the fallback of "but the Maine voters like him!" You know who else the voters liked? Donald Trump. The voters can be wrong!

@jonfavs i just think we should consider how liberals would react if a republican walked around with a nazi tattoo, bragged about it years ago, and then apologized once he ran for office. we'd be screaming bloody murder and rightfully so. so...how is it okay when platner does it?

Without looking, guess what percentage of boys on high school track teams in 2025 could keep up with Sawe for: a) 400 meters (67.97); b) 800 meters (2:15.94); c) 1600 meters (4:31.88); and d) 3200 (9:03.76) meters.
Ray Fisman@RFisman

I am sure others have done this breakdown, but if you want to experience how fast Sebastian Sawe ran the London Marathon, go to a track and try to run 400m in 68 seconds. If you are in truly amazing shape, maybe you can do a second one. Now imagine doing 103 more.

@darkosinne Fair, but other advanced stats, (e.g., box +/-), the MVPs, others' lists (e.g. ESPN's top 75), and my own memory all say something similar--he's GREAT but not the 3rd best player ever. I view him in line w/ Steph or Duncan, both of whom are AWESOME. (I'd put him above Shaq, FWIW)

@darkosinne And my subjective eye test is he is Top 5 easily in most graceful and effective scorers ever, so I agree w/ you on footwork, etc. But he was never quite as terrifying and dominant as someone like peak Shaq, nor was he as good at elevating his teammates as Bird, Magic or Duncan.

@darkosinne But, his best all-time season in win shares is 119th. I get it’s not a perfect stat but you’d expect the third best player of all time to do better than that.
