@Tim_Vickery You say it was England's game until the goal. I actually think we were beginning to see a very different Argentina in the second half, and the goal came slightly against the run of play.

@Tim_Vickery Tooney, rashford were brought in for just that. They still couldn’t retain possession because Arg was full press. England were just a level below. They are not Spain.

Seeing a lot about complexities and mentality, but for me it comes down to a basic concept; The man without the ball makes the play And so if there is no one moving into position, there is no play. And England's bench was full of players who could have been the option

@Observer853211 @Tim_Vickery Take off Kane and Rice, who are completely knackered and cannot press. Bring on Konsa and Toney/Watkins, bring James into midfield with Anderson, Konsa to right back. Truth is no manager would have the balls to bring off Kane because he set up our first goal.

@Tim_Vickery @AlexisIsKavkas Fair point Tim. That said, Argentina started the 2nd half way, way better with England's goal very much against the run of play. Viewing that, perhaps Tuchel didn't think the 'out ball' was going to work twice as Argentina ramped up the pressure before any subs were made.

Blaming Tuchel is classic English mentality: results over process. He warned everyone after Norway that England’s lack of control would catch up with them. Moment a top team puts us under pressure, our players stop demanding the ball and look for the quickest way to relieve it.

@Zonal_Marking Tiredness is clearly a fator, and we all knew that the route was punishing But Air condicioned stadium, v older opponent who'd played 2 extra times. Both CBs on a yellow, holding midfielder subbed, lots of speed on the bench.... Surely the key ? - what would Argentina not want?

Same old England. On first viewing I thought Tuchel’s subs were disastrous. On second viewing, the retreat happened beforehand, a consequence of Argentina pushing on & England being exhausted. The three defensive subs did make sense. Analysis here…⬇️ nytimes.com/athletic/74485…
