Aoun’s challenge is to ensure Lebanon isn't treated as another front. This requires persuasively showing the state is capable of managing the Hezbollah question itself, as opposed to remaining trapped between endless Israeli bombardment & encroaching Iranian impositions.

Politics and diplomacy are the only resolution to this conflict. Therefore, it is imperative that Washington supports Lebanese state-building efforts, unlocks key resources, and pushes against violations of the country’s sovereignty.

Let's be realistic. Lebanon needs support for a domestic state-building project: resources & regaining the trust of a disillusioned population, especially its Shi'a community. But this project can't be achieved without Israeli withdrawal & a state-led roadmap to reconstruction.

Aoun’s visit to DC comes at a critical moment for Lebanon given the fragility of the ceasefire with Israel. His visit is expected to focus on the implementation of the Trilateral Framework and key files like disarmament and reconstruction.

Given Aoun's upcoming visit to the US, Washington needs to see that indefinite military pressure can’t produce a country & that Hezbollah can’t be dismantled through endless war. Destruction without a political strategy only reproduces the conditions that lead to state breakdown.

1/2 The US’s longstanding policy of Israeli (and American) exceptionalism, it’s complicity in Israel’s criminality and expansionism, completely defeat and undermine the US’s stated priorities of ensuring Lebanon’s sovereignty.

The US can help Lebanon's govt achieve our shared goal of a strong, sovereign, & secure Lebanese state. We can do so by securing a full ceasefire & Israeli withdrawal while investing in the state's abilty to rebuild homes & institutions, showing the people their state can deliver
