Some Almaty, Kazakhstan observations from someone who's been here almost a week. - This is a modern city in every sense of the word. It may not suit someone who's looking for the full-on Silk Road, narrow lanes and bazaars experience. - The people are lovely. If you need help, they are there for you. - There's a generally relaxed, slow pace to life that reminds me of Spain. When the sun is shining, that's the time to sit outside and linger over a coffee. - The scooters on the footpath are a pain in the arse. - You'll encounter language problems. Many menus and signs don't have English. Smartphone translation apps will help but nothing beats speaking a language. - It's not an expensive travel destination. But it's not a cheap one either. - It feels incredibly safe to walk around at night. - You see very few obvious tourists in Almaty. - One thing my wife loves about Almaty is that no one stands out. There are all races and nationalities of all kinds here... except Africans. - Kazaks look good but they don't overly dress to impress. No one seems to give a shit about brand names. I admire that. - Supermarket prices feel on a par with Thailand, maybe even a little more. - There are coffee shops everywhere. Great coffee culture here. - The cheap street food options certainly include the doner kebab. Turkish food is popular and very reasonably priced. - Yandex Go is the taxi-riding app and works very well. It feels cheaper than Grab in Thailand. I'll add more as I think of them. #Almaty2026

I can't find a single journalist, ex-player or pundit calling for Slot to be sacked. It's astonishing how much leeway the media is giving him. Warning signs were there when Slot went to Ibiza before the season had even finished. Elite managers would already be planning for the next season while he was celebrating. Hard to imagine his idol Luis Enrique doing the same. The midweek player trips are a joke, but they’re simply a continuation of Slot’s own attitude. I wonder how many Enrique would allow.
