Not a mass migration Let’s kill that idea first No wave of engineers packing bags from Silicon Valley to Europe That’s not what’s happening What is happening is more interesting The default path is breaking It used to be “Top talent → US” No questions asked Now EU talent is staying More founders are building locally More researchers are funded locally More infra is being built locally From the US It’s not simply “people moving back” It’s friction increasing Visas Costs Politics Layoffs cycles So fewer people are going That matters more than people leaving From Asia Still flows to the US But China is closing its own loop So that pipeline isn’t as global anymore either So no This isn’t a “talent returning to Europe” story That’s too simple This is a “the US is no longer the automatic center of gravity” story And that’s the part people underestimate Because shifts like this don’t start loud They start with Fewer people leaving More people staying Capital following slowly Fragmentation > migration Reality is that European countries are dumping US tech. - Microsoft to Linux. - MS365 to Open Libra. - Teams and Zoom to Visio - WhatsApp etc to Wise etc. - Visa and Mastercard to Wero, iDeal, MobilePay, Revolut. - Uber to Bolt - AWS/GCP/Azure to OVHCloud, STACKIT etc. All these new initiatives need builders so the tech scene suddenly has a lot more to offer. That’s the signal

Enjoyed this article Timo. That's a great approach having skin in the game. The right mindset. And it paid off! I'm all about having a forcing function. A lot of what you wrote about aligns well with my thinking and approach. I've just gone through a similar process of testing/trial-and-error. (wrotr about it in my second issue: newsletter.danielclayton.me/p/focused-simp…)

This is not graduation celebration. In Finland, Walpurgis night (Vappu) ("Vappen") is one of the five biggest holidays along with Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, Easter, and Midsummer (Juhannus - Midsommar).Walpurgis witnesses the biggest carnival-style festival held in Finland's cities and towns. The celebrations, which begin on the evening of 30 April and continue on 1 May, typically centre on the consumption of sima, sparkling wine and other alcoholic beverages. Student traditions, particularly those of engineering students, are one of the main characteristics of Vappu. Since the end of the 19th century, this traditional upper-class feast has been appropriated by university students. Many lukio (university-preparatory high school) alumni wear the black and white student cap and many higher education students wear student coveralls. One tradition is to drink sima, a home-made low-alcohol mead, along with freshly cooked funnel cakes.

@leggah7 People go to the big park by the sea for champagne breakfast => carries to lunch and beers and beyond. Friend has a sailboat on the pier there so we often hang out there.
