Par la Francophonie, aussi, nous poursuivons notre route : après le Sommet de Villers-Cotterêts en 2024, le prochain rendez-vous est fixé à Phnom Penh où j’aurai le plaisir de me rendre en novembre. It was a pleasure to meet with the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia @Dr_Hunmanet_PM 🇰🇭 We reaffirmed our shared ambition for stronger EU-ASEAN relations, and the importance of respect of international law, including territorial integrity. The EU strongly values Cambodia’s support for Ukraine, including in the UN. We also discussed the border conflict with Thailand. The EU welcomes the ceasefire agreement and calls on both sides to implement it in good faith.

I first met Steve years ago when I needed immigration advice for my older son, who is Cambodian. I have always found him level-headed and well informed. He has lived in Cambodia for 30 years and works closely with economically disadvantaged families. While I do not always agree with his approach, I take this video seriously and believe him. Regardless of the border dispute, Thailand forcibly displaced thousands of people from the Chouk Chey Village area in Banteay Meanchey. Prior to the renewed fighting, joint surveying was underway, a peaceful process for resolving disputed areas. Now unexploded ordnance has made the area unsafe, leaving thousands unable to return home, many permanently, following Thai aggression. "My youngest daughter's name is Pearl, or "Srey Kuit" in Khmer. Yesterday, I was in a village that I have worked in for many years helping CMAC locate unexploded bombs. There I met another girl name Srey Kuit who shared with me a video of her nearly being killed by a mortar round shot by Thailand on December 9. The video is shocking to watch. She did live. It is not safe for her to live in her village yet, but she is too poor to not go to work at a nearby factory. There are still 150,000 people who are unable to return to their villages simply because Thailand has taken over their homes and destroyed them, or there are unexploded bombs all over their village making it unsafe to live there."

Thailand imposes a naval blockade of Cambodia. Phnom Penh could mitigate using land connectivity. That said, economic impact will start to show if conflict drags on. Cambodia’s largely vintage, brownwater navy has barely any credible means to challenge or break the blockade.

The exact distance may vary depending on how it is measured, but the broader point stands. These strikes go well beyond any credible claim of border protection. Earlier today, a Thai F-16 strike was close enough to be heard at a local school, resulting in students fleeing their classrooms in panic. The strike also occurred near a displacement camp in Srei Snam district, Siem Reap. Following the bombing, displaced families fled once again to seek safer locations. What is Thailand hoping to achieve here?

At At 10:08 a.m. and 10:11 a.m. on December 15, the Thai military used F-16 fighter jets to drop two bombs in Chong Kal District and Srei Snam District, Siem Reap Province, near refugee camps, penetrating more than 70 kilometers into Cambodian territory. This constitutes an act of aggression by the Thai military, deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. Thailand has violated international law by attacking civilians. The video footage shows students at a school in Srei Snam District fleeing after the Thai military dropped bombs near their school. The number of civilians killed by Thailand’s armed aggressive attacks has risen to 12, with 74 injured. The number of displaced civilians has increased to more than 400,000 people.

The world should have seen Thai military actions.
