Eastern DRC is spiraling as violence surges, displacing 400,000+ in 25 days. Civilians & aid workers face grave risks while blocked routes & broken supply chains hamper aid delivery. We need safety & access to reach those in desperate need. apnews.com/article/congo-… #DRCrisis

Senator Graham is correct. For pennies on the dollar, American foreign assistance not only protects vulnerable children and families—it enhances U.S. security and prosperity, making it a deft use of taxpayer funds.
Liz Schrayer@LizSchrayer

At the Senate Budget hearing yesterday - classic @LindseyGrahamSC questioning OMB Director nominee Russ Vought about the International Affairs Budget: SEN. GRAHAM: Do you know how much money the State and Foreign Operations subcommittee spends on the State Department and foreign assistance? VOUGHT: Off the top of my head, no SEN. GRAHAM: It's $69 billion. Now that's for the entire State Department, all our embassies, everybody, and the aid we provide to distressed places in the world. What percentage of the federal budget is that, do you know outlays? VOUGHT: I believe ... it would be a small percentage compared to— SEN. GRAHAM: It's 1 percent. Now having said that, try to save money, let's don't waste money, I'm a pretty hawkish guy--if you don't get involved in the world and you don't have programs in Africa where China is trying to buy the whole continent, we're making a mistake. So it's 1 percent of the budget, you could eliminate it all. You're not going to balance the budget. I think soft power is a critical component of defending America and our values. I look forward to working with you to make that count better. But the concept of soft power means a lot to me, and that--that's coming from a pretty hawkish guy.

The US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement is a devastating blow to climate action, weakening global commitments to reduce emissions & support climate-vulnerable communities. A huge step backward when we urgently need greater ambition to address the climate crisis, not retreat.

My colleagues in Gaza are sharing reactions to the #ceasefire deal as we anxiously wait & as airstrikes continue. One said, "I still can’t absorb the fact that there is a life after war. There is an after war. My subconscious mind is convinced that war is my life forever."

Strong recommendations from @kpbarrasso in @devex for how the incoming US Administration can advance locally led development to increase the impact of US-funded foreign assistance programs, reinforcing global stability & US interests.
Devex@devex

The incoming Trump administration has a unique opportunity to expand its previous policies on localization by supporting countries with cost-effective solutions that build self-reliance & bolster US interests, writes @mercycorps@kpbarrasso. #Opinion⬇️ #Echobox=1736412735" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">devex.com/news/opinion-t…

Easing restrictions on humanitarian aid to Syria is critical & the general license issued by US Treasury today will help aid groups deliver essential supplies & support after much uncertainty over the last month. apnews.com/article/treasu…

I am outraged by the killing of three @WFP staff members in Sudan after a field office was hit by aerial bombardment. 2024 is the deadliest year on record for aid workers in Sudan. Despite significant threats to their safety, they continue to do all they can to provide vital support wherever needed. My deepest condolences to the families of the victims and their WFP colleagues.

Glad to see new funds committed to Sudan by the US government this week. 30 million people will need humanitarian assistance in Sudan in 2025 - 5 million more than this year as conflict grinds on. Global funding is nowhere near where it needs to be to meet the staggering needs.

The beginning of this transformative chapter for #Syria brings much hope & uncertainty. One thing is certain: with massive humanitarian needs & funding at critically low levels, the stakes couldn’t be higher & the need for urgent international funding & investment never greater.

Renewed conflict in Syria is deeply worrying. Infrastructure in displacement camps is overstretched & any influx threatens to leave thousands w/out support. 800K people are already living in tents unable to withstand harsh winter conditions. mercycorps.org/press-room/rel…
