Doesn't seem that long ago, but 18 years ago today, my brother in arms and my friend, Tony Downes, was killed by an IED blast outside Sangin, Afghanistan. Tony was a member of 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards of the British Army.

In July of 1943, paratroopers with the 82nd Airborne prepare to jump over Sicily in the first American combat jump of the war. 🪂

@mikenelson586 I flew out of Pope 22 years ago next month to MK Airfield, Romania, to support 10th Group for the invasion of Northern Iraq.

22 years ago today I got on a plane at Pope Air Force Base to fly to Kuwait where I would stage for the invasion of Iraq.

@timbuckley4413 @MilHistNow Visited the location of Wereth massacre five years ago. About 20 miles SE of the Malmedy massacre location. The Belgian family that took in the 11 African American soldiers 80 years ago, maintained a memorial there for several decades. #NeverForget

Today in 1944, 84 American POWs are shot by the SS at Malmedy, Belgium. Others are massacred at Büllinge, Baugnez and Wereth. 74 Germans will later be tried for the atrocity; 43 are condemned to death. The sentences are commuted after it emerges that the defendants were abused while in U.S. custody.

🇧🇪 🇺🇸 80 years on As a dwindling band of veterans arrive in Belgium for this weekend's commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, we spare a thought for 101st Airborne veteran and regular visitor to Bastogne, Vincent Speranza. Mr. Speranza would have loved to be present, but sadly passed away last year at the age of 98. During the siege of Bastogne, he went on a hunt for a drink for a thirsty comrade who was being treated for his wounds at a field hospital. He could only find beer, and returned with some held in his helmet.

@BBGreatMoments To be fair, this was Todd Helton’s Junior year, and Manning’s Freshman year. Helton got injured during the 4th game of the season and Manning took over as the starting QB the rest of the season.
