Britain is uniquely exposed to this. I can’t see employment numbers ever getting higher than they are today.

@asadabukhalil Yes, but note that, ironically Shia Lebanese have a higher proportion of light eyes than "European" Greeks (and probably more than Christians).

🦔Meta's $10 billion Hyperion data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, will receive $3.3 billion in state and local tax breaks over 20 years, enough to fund the state's entire police budget for more than seven years. The deal exempts Meta from sales and use taxes on roughly $35 billion in GPUs.
Louisiana is one of 36 states offering tax breaks for data centers, with Virginia foregoing $1.9 billion annually, Georgia $2.6 billion, and Texas jumping from $150 million to over $1 billion in a single year. Only 11 of those 36 states disclose which companies receive the breaks. Local opposition blocked 48 data center projects worth $156 billion in 2025.
My Take
Louisiana taxpayers are subsidizing Meta's GPU purchases at a rate exceeding what the state spends on most of its public services, and Meta is spending $135 billion on capex this year. The company does not need help getting off the ground. The justification comes down to 500 operational jobs once construction ends, which does not pencil out in any honest accounting of public investment return. The race keeps happening because states are competing against each other, and the only beneficiaries are the hyperscalers playing them off.
25 of the 36 states giving away billions refuse to disclose which companies are receiving the breaks, which removes the accountability that would normally check this kind of arrangement. Good Jobs First says the $3.3 billion estimate likely understates the true subsidy because nobody outside the deal actually knows what got promised in the contract. Local opposition blocking $156 billion in projects last year is the only mechanism currently slowing the race, and the disparity between what hyperscalers are getting and what communities receive in return is wide enough that a reckoning on these deals is coming. The only question is whether it arrives before the next 3,000 data centers get built or after.

@HedgieMarkets It would be worth looking at the replacement rate of US high paying roles with offshoring or getting visa workers. It’s an ongoing trend for every corporate - and each country’s leadership either pretends to be blind to the upcoming social catastrophe or they are indeed unaware.

🦔Cisco is cutting nearly 4,000 jobs, just under 5% of its workforce, on the same day it reported record Q3 revenue of $15.8 billion, up 12% year over year. In the same letter announcing record results, CEO Chuck Robbins told employees the company was eliminating thousands of roles to shift investment toward AI-related work in silicon, optics, and security. The stock rallied roughly 20% on the announcement. Cisco has run annual layoffs in 10 of the last 15 years even during profitable periods, and these cuts come the same week LinkedIn announced 875 layoffs, with 103,000 tech layoffs already tracked across the sector in 2026.
My Take
I have written some version of this story every week for two months, and the same playbook keeps showing up because the incentives keep producing it. Profitable, growing companies are restructuring toward AI work and shedding everything that does not serve that pivot, which is a different category of decision than what most people picture when they hear "layoffs." Telling employees you broke records and then announcing thousands of cuts in the same letter should make anyone uncomfortable, because Cisco just printed record revenue and double-digit growth in the same quarter it told 4,000 employees they were done.
Cisco's 20% stock rally on the combination of strong earnings and aggressive headcount cuts is what I keep coming back to, because investors just told every executive in tech that firing workers during profitable quarters gets rewarded. If I am a Cisco executive watching that response, the logical takeaway is that the next round of cuts should come sooner and be larger, because the market has explicitly priced in the move it wants to see. The 103,000 tech layoffs through May reflect that logic operating at scale across the sector, and the 22-year-olds graduating into this market are walking into an entry-level job environment that fundamentally does not exist the way it did even two years ago.

@elder_plinius None. If it grows beyond human control and turns into Frankenstein we will be dead before we feel any fear. If it turns into a guide for our evolution also no fear about anything. The only fear arises in between - from humans that will use it for harm.
