Typical nonsense shared on this app January isn’t tax on money you haven’t earned. It’s last year’s balance plus a payment on account based on prior profits Paid at end of Jan, you’re 10 months into the year and only paying 6 months’ worth You can also request a reduction

@Carl_The_Scorer @Tesco Most won’t do the math. It’s framed to be a better offer than it is and will catch many out who will just see the clubcard offer and make assumptions.

Why is one priced per kg and the other per 100g @Tesco The bright yellow clubcard price certainly makes it look like it's a great offer when it actually isn't

@Philipbutcher1 @Tesco I understand what each costs. The point is that it’s framing leads many consumers to buy the more expensive one, thinking they are getting a better deal.

@TobyHines @Tesco 2 different size packets. 1 is 410 grams the other i 750 grams so even though the smaller size one is on a club card non club card deal they are both priced accordingly.

@TobyHines @Tesco They do that with coffee as well. They price the 200gm jars one way and the pouches the other so you have to work out best value as the pouches weigh less. I don't go shopping to solve maths questions.

@AlanJLSmith I expect he will soon send you a bill for backdated pocket money when he realises that in real terms, he’s been getting a pocket money pay cut

@MavenAdviser @AdviserPodcast @CarlWidger @AlanJLSmith @HatTipNick Thank you for taking a moment out of your day to comment 😀 I’m super excited and cannot wait to get started! 25 years ago I founded a regional newspaper, exiting in 2019, so this was probably an inevitable road once I felt I was fully confident I was ready

@AlanJLSmith A pension is meant to be used for retirement, it's not supposed to be passed on, you get incredibly generous tax breaks on saving into a pension for this reason

There’s something wrong when the taxman receives 64% of your pension fund and your kids have to share the 36% remaining.

This is a major issue for employers. If you run a business and the default option for your company pension scheme is a “lifestyle fund” you run the risk of having very unhappy employees. There’s also talk of a class action and compensation. Speak to your advisers about it.

Helen is right I advise on £millions in pension assets that clients do not draw income from, and were intending to leave tax efficiently to their beneficiaries But that is not what pensions are intended for, and even though today's budget will increase the taxation from pensions on death, the rate is much lower than it was before we had this brief period (2015-2027) of pensions being the estate planning tools they became. For those pensioners with big enough pensions, I hope they will choose to spend more on their holidays, their healthcare and their children, and all the benefits that come with that, instead of just leaving them to be inherited.
Helen Barnard@Helen_Barnard

Pensions should be used as income when people are retired. Tax regimes shouldn't incentivise people not to use it for what it's intended because they're trying to pass on inheritance. From perspective of both pensioner living standards and not fuelling inequality this is good.
