#UPDATE South Africa’s government says an unannounced trip to Zimbabwe by President Cyril Ramaphosa was a “working visit… to discuss issues of mutual and bilateral interests.” Ramaphosa flew in military chopper with Mnangagwa and two tender magnates - Wicknell Chivayo and Kudakwashe Tagwirei - to the Zimbabwe president’s farm in Kwekwe, sparking speculation over the purpose of the visit amid a Zanu PF plot to extend Mnangagwa’s term from 2028-2030. Tagwirei, who is under US and UK sanctions, is reportedly eyeing the presidency as Mnangagwa’s successor

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the sentencing of Clifford Moyo (37) and Nhlanhla Ncube (31) by the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, where the two were handed multiple life sentences for a series of brutal murders and armed robberies committed in Troyville and surrounding areas in October 2023. The court heard that the pair carried out a coordinated and violent crime spree over several days. On 6 October 2023, they fatally shot Mehluli Sibanda in Bertrams. Two days later, they stormed a home in Troyville, robbed the occupants, and killed four people inside the property, bringing the total number of victims to five. They were also convicted on additional charges including unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and violations of the Immigration Act, as both were found to be undocumented foreign nationals at the time of their arrest. In court, the State described the crimes as exceptionally brutal and senseless, targeting vulnerable victims, including elderly individuals, and showing a complete disregard for human life. The judge echoed this, highlighting the callous nature of the attacks, particularly the killing of victims inside their own home, and the lasting trauma inflicted on surviving family members, some of whom witnessed the murders. Moyo was sentenced to five life terms of imprisonment along with an additional 73 years, while Ncube received three life sentences plus a further 76 years, with the added sentences set to run concurrently. Both men were also declared unfit to possess firearms. The NPA said the outcome reflects the justice system’s firm stance against violent crime and reinforces its commitment to ensuring accountability and justice for victims and affected communities.
