@KingVelesI @Aneka15amyth Yeah my policy on games has always been "never play anything you don't feel you can/would turn off at any time or for any reason."

@Aneka15amyth Eh, I'm mostly referring to people who sink deep into highly addictive games and play them for hours a day, not to folks who play a few rounds of tetris to decompress.

No matter how much you love gaming (I sure did), you'll probably regret the time you've spent on it one day. Sure, you can cope by telling yourself you are "learning stuff", "increasing your problem-solving skills", "improving your reflexes", etc., but deep down, you know that's BS, as I did in my gaming days. Once that screen goes dark, you have NOTHING to show for all the hours of your life you've poured into it. They're gone forever. Sure, you got some cheap dopamine out of it. For a minute, you felt that sweet sense of progress and accomplishment. But that was merely fake progress and the illusion of accomplishment. Back in reality, you did nothing but sit in a chair while moving pixels on a screen. Hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of hours poured into mastering a skill that is completely inapplicable to anything in the real world. Had you devoted that time to a worthy skill instead, you would've been a master craftsman, artist, athlete, musician, you name it, by now. It's not too late, though. You still have a choice. You can keep whittling your life away while moving strong, intelligent, capable, and impressive characters on a screen, or... you can become one of them. Choose wisely, for time is the stuff life is made of, and you have less of it than you think. As a former passionate gamer, let me tell you: There's far more joy, accomplishment, and fulfillment to be found in the real world.

4/n Looks as though 2006 will start out where 2005 left off: Fact-free, incurious, ideological MAHA pseudoscience, uncaring about the child health impact of their false beliefs and obsessions. Remember as I always say: Antivaccine activists don't care about you or your family, they have another agenda.

Well, this got more attention than I expected. According to the replies, seed oils are such a slow-acting poison that my eating large amounts of them on a daily basis for the last three and a half decades is still not enough to cause any outwardly visible symptoms, but I will definitely notice the consequences of my poor diet choices when I'm forty, fifty-five, sixty-plus, etc. Others have speculated that we might be able to resist the destructive effects of seed oils thanks to the fact that we lead healthy and active lifestyles, something they claim is not the case for the average victim of Big Seed Oil. Ironically, the possibility of these people having health issues precisely because they DON'T lead healthy and active lifestyles — and not because of seed oils — never seems to cross their minds. Others yet have suggested that we should try to cut seed oils from our diet and see if that makes us feel better, and that's exactly what we did, time and time again — after we slaughter a lot of sheep, we'll use just sheep tallow for months on end, and when we run out of it, we'll switch back to seed oil. We've been going back and forth between these for a good few years now, and never noticed any difference whatsoever when switching between the tallow of our 100% pasture-raised sheep and standard, hexane-extracted sunflower oil we buy at the store. My impression from all of this is that people will happily embrace any silly internet meme — no matter how scientifically unsound it is — that tells them they can get healthy and good-looking by simply cutting out this or that "evil" and "unnatural" food item. On the other hand, the truth — that people are fat and unhealthy because they eat way too much and that in order to become healthy and sexy they'll need to discipline themselves and put the fork down — is a MASSIVELY unpopular take that results in people unfollowing you and claiming you have low IQ. And so, through denial of reality, we keep getting fatter and fatter.

X is so weird with the whole seed oils scare. Wife and I grew up on tons of seed oils — pretty standard for our country — and still use copious amounts of them whenever we run out of sheep tallow. Then, I come on X and see that they are supposedly "poison", and the cause of every physical, mental, and spiritual ailment known to man. Wondering if there might be some truth to it, I try to find some reputable sources to confirm this, and fail — all I find is research consistent with my lived experience, saying seed oils are safe and even healthy. Regardless, the meme has grown so powerful, at this point, that there's no stopping it. It replicates itself at exponential speed, devouring any counter-argument in its wake — Seed oils are POISON!!! So... I guess all the seed oils we eat should make us fat and unhealthy any day now, huh?
