Farsides et al (2021) now available as Farsides et al (2023)! 'Altruistic concern' (#altruism) can encourage 'prosocial behaviour' *OR* an alternative to it (e.g., 'inaction'), depending on which seems likely to best serve the welfare of the other one most cares about. @An040my

Beyond “altruism motivates body donation” (Open Access). Altruism is not waiting to be discharged at any opportunity. It results from concerns for particular others’ welfare; with desires to foster that welfare in particular ways, at particular times. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

It's very unfortunate that humans inherited their conflict resolution practices from the same genetic line as the chimpanzees, rather than the bonobos.

To answer some angry questions: yes I do have principles, and one of them is that it's a very bad idea to put serious opinions on Twitter. So you may as well stop haranguing me for them. All I'm saying is: there is no need to bully a sweet, jolly quizzer for playing a TV quiz.

@RestIsPolitics Please say more about Britain being very rich while having serious deterioration in education, justice, transport, welfare, etc. Visits to allegedly poorer countries make this all the more bewildering. How is 'national' wealth calculated? Whose wealth?

@DanWuori Babies are undoubtedly OFTEN adorable but they are also sometimes really grating, with shrieking, soul-crushing crying that sometimes seem absolutely resistant to being placated. May I ask what the ‘design’ Is there? Genuine question. Many thanks. Tom

Your baby is adorable by design. Those big eyes. Those chubby little cheeks. That sweet smile… Indeed, science suggests that babies’ cuteness is designed to stimulate caregiving responses in the parental brain… protecting infants and making them more likely to survive from an evolutionary perspective. And it’s not just their visual appeal. Research suggests that cuteness is actually a multi-sensory experience, with children’s early vocalizations and even that great “new baby smell” all contributing to our desire to protect and care for them. Put simply, newborns have a biological ability to wrap us right around their fingers. It’s a superpower really. This precious little one was shared to IG by _lullaby_luxuries_.

Whether I count as a scientist is up for (tedious) debate but I will talk and listen to anyone anywhere who seems like they are willing to converse in good faith. I will try not to feed the trolls. Anyone else, please chat!
Kevin Mitchell@WiringTheBrain

So, for now, I'm staying. I hope others will too. We can't, as scientists, just spend our time talking to each other. The stakes are just too high to cede the battleground of ideas, tempting as it may be. 6/6

I fundamentally disagree with just about every part of this thread. There is more than one way to do good science. There is more to doing good science than replicability. And (more importantly) calling to the community to "drive out" researchers is, in my opinion, abhorrent.
Daniël Lakens@lakens

It is extremely sad to see some qualitative resesrchers take the epistemologicl view that truth is crested, and qualitative resesrch is in principle not replicable. These voices should be severely criticized within the qualitative research community, and preferably driven out.

Psychologists should STANDARDLY assume multiple possible motives and ask people what they are trying to do and why. (Doh!) Kudos to @carlsonr_ & @mollycrocket1 for allowing participants to report that MANY things can influence their 'Willingness To Pay' osf.io/preprints/psya…
