Coloured in another bit of the Baker Atlas today, the branch from Princes Risborough to Aylesbury that had intrigued me for years as I flew past on the main line. Saturday trains run through to Marylebone so we missed departure from the bay but still it’s a remarkable survivor.

On this day. West Silkstone Junction signal-box 20/3/1969. The box was at the top of the Worsbrough incline between Wath and Penistone, the class 76 bankers were detached here and assisting locomotives for extra braking were attached to descending trains. © Keith Long

Former GWR 2-6-2T No 4524 is seen at Yelverton with a train for the Princetown branch in July 1955. The line, which was just over 10 miles in length opened in 1883 and closed in March 1956. Princetown at 1,373 feet above sea level, was the highest station in England.

#OnThisDay 58 years ago the northern bay platform at Mansion House was abolished leaving just the central bay (also since gone), vestiges of the station's history as a terminus. 1980s redevelopment of the station hid the trackless bay from view. Roger Cox buff.ly/40SZvNM

A view at Hemyock where No 1451 has just arrived on 26 June 1959. Passenger services ended in September 1963 but goods trains continued to serve a diary there until 1975. The ex Barry Railway coach was gaslit, the trains ran too slowly to recharge conventional coach batteries.

It's a while since we had a delve into the Crecy Archive. A long northbound goods hauled by G2 class 0-8-0 No 49430 was seen between Brinklow and Shilton, near Rugby, on 5 July 1952. The G2s were a development of a 1912 Bowen Cooke design for the LNWR and were introduced in 1921.

Work to extend the platforms at @svrofficialsite Kidderminster Town station is well underway. The new starting signals are on a large bracket rescued from Radyr in south Wales many years ago.

An associate of his crouching in the foliage, Patrick B. Whitehouse photographs 3200 9024 coming away from Fairbourne with a local, bedecked in carmine & cream, in 1954. 9024 had been one of the later Earls - lacking an allocated name - built from 3328 Severn & 3409 Queensland.

Quite a modern look to this working, recorded over 60 years ago in April 1965. V2 No 60846 heads a southbound cement train near Thornton Junction in Fife, a block train of uniform, perhaps relatively new wagons, though without continuous brakes, as a Brake Van makes up the rear.
