Alleged Imagineer. Unofficial WED historian. Had something to do with a castle somewhere in 🇫🇷 and some neon Mickeys. Also lurking on Bluesky and IG!

@TomKMorris Is the hurricane a stylized hidden WED D on the SSE mural?

Here's something I never noticed before & I bet no one else has either--especially since it's long gone. A hidden, slightly abstracted WED "D" complete w/star, hiding within the proscenium of 1967's Tomorrowland Stage. l think we can all guess who placed it. IMHO, more fun than hidden Mickeys!

@EpcotLegacy Was this compiled from different sources or is it something like a singular publicity reel?

The lake (did it have a name?) which I always presumed was at Golden Oak Ranch, was actually shot in Canoga Park/West Hills. Today, the lake is still there, and still has the small island... but it's now surrounded by homes in a gated community! Does anyone reading this live there?!

A family is enjoying their day at Freedomland. The ladies and children are relaxing below the San Francisco train station. The date on the photo is March 1964 but the park had not opened for the season. This photo is from 1963.

Finally, (I could go on, but priorities call) the little folly structure at the summer home was shot back on the Disney lot. I'm not certain, but it's likely that it was placed over the "cement pond" created to test effects for the Submarine Voyage. It was adjacent to the Rathcullen village sets, and they would've just finished the Submarine tests when shooting began on Darby. In a memo, Walt insisted that the pond be reused for subsequent productions. BTW, all of this is collateral information gleaned searching for something else! I've only seen the film a couple of times, so I'm obviously overdue for another viewing (on @DisneyPlus).

Today you can still see how these rolling hills, when blessed with a little rain, can resemble the terra of Ireland, especially with the occasional, curious rock outcroppings. While much was added by Ellenshaw, this topography provided the film crew with an inexpensive head start.

The rolling foothills of Knocknasheega, leading up to King Brien's cavern, were also not shot at Golden Oak Ranch, but rather along the hills between Agoura and Thousand Oaks. This shot in particular was looking directly into Westlake Village, but you wouldn't know it thanks to the talents of Peter Ellenshaw and Ub Iwerk

Smart scene blocking, and if necessary, Peter Ellenshaw's paintbrush, took care of most of the power lines and nearby Keystone Street eucalyptus tree intrusions. Most of these sets were saved & overdressed for later films such as Toby Tyler and Bullwhip Griffin. Some were even moved around. A few of them made it all the way to Pete's Dragon.

Every March 18 I realize I forgot about St Patty's Day. This time I finally caught it in time to post some Darby O'Gill and the Little People fun facts: Most know that it wasn't shot in Ireland, but it also wasn't shot at Golden Oak Ranch, as is commonly believed, except maybe a few scenes. The Village of Rathcullen, including its Tavern, was purpose-built on the NE corner of the Disney lot. If you squint, you can see the power lines running along Alameda Ave.

@TomKMorris @alisonmartino I grew up watching I Love Lucy pretty much every evening (my mom had the entire series on VHS), so Gale Gordon will forever be Mr. Littlefield to me.

Great Lucy Show clip discovered by LA historian @alisonmartino which peeks into the LAX Theme building 30 years pre-Encounter, when the restaurant had the sexy name "Host International."🤔 Gail Gordon will forever remind me of Walt Disney, but my comment fell flat with one Lucy historian.
