During my time as governor, I served for eight years. You can go to that state and verify that I never borrowed from any financial institution. I have never been invited or questioned over any missing public funds anywhere.
The day I left office, I was not owing any contractor or supplier who had completed and delivered their projects. I was not owing salaries, pensions, or gratuities. I left over $50 million each for the state in three banks — Access Bank, Diamond Bank, and Fidelity Bank.
I never borrowed because I operated a lean government and eliminated a lot of waste, cutting inefficiency across the entire system.
That was why I was able to build one of the best road networks and other critical infrastructure, while also clearing debts and pension liabilities, including those inherited from my predecessors. There was no need to borrow.
I recovered substantial funds from waste and managed the state faithfully, leaving behind healthy savings. The system can work if we do the right things. Saving money was in addition to excellent performance.
I won the Federal Government’s award for the best road network, as well as an award from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for excellence in education and healthcare.
