Calling League of Legends Coaches 🎮 Are you currently coaching a semi-professional League of Legends team? I’m conducting a study examining how esports coaches design, deliver and review team practice. This is part of my PhD research at @QUT. The project aims to better understand coaching in competitive League of Legends and contribute to evidence-informed approaches to coach development and practice design. Participation involves: 🎤 Two online, audio-recorded interviews (30–60 minutes each): one before the training observation period and one after the recorded sessions have been analysed. 🎥 Recording and securely sharing approximately 3–5 upcoming team training sessions for research analysis. The study focuses on the coaching environment rather than evaluating individual player performance. By participating, coaches can contribute their experiences and perspectives to research that may inform future esports coach education and practice design. We take a W versus Iceland to finish the first day of the ENC qualifier 2-1! I'm super happy with our results today and excited to have the opportunity to come back in the lower bracket. Our next matches are against Switzerland and the loser of Belgium/Germany tomorrow.

In Round 2, we lost to Italy. We're headed into the lower bracket now versus Iceland. All to play for to make it to Saturday!

Over the weekend, I hit 100 citations on my research. While a modest number, it is exciting to see the work gain traction. For those who might not be aware, as a researcher and applied practitioner, my work aims to answer a critical question: How can we (coaches) develop esports athletes? So far, my published work has explored this question through both theoretical and applied perspectives. • A theoretical framework introducing skill acquisition and ecological dynamics to esports • An applied case study demonstrating how practice design can shape team coordination and communication Together, these studies point to a key insight: 👉 Esports does not have a practice quantity problem; it has a practice design problem Players & teams already invest a large amount of time playing, watching and talking about the game. However, more can be done. Coaches should be more intentional in their practice design. In the applied work with a League of Legends team, we saw how small changes to practice allowed us: • improve coordination & communication between players • develop more adaptable decision-making I continue to find answers to this question through my PhD, and will hopefully be able to share some findings with you guys soon!
