Farage's lie is still being spread. Coutts closed Farage's accounts because he didn't meet their published financial criteria. Yes, his political views were a factor. They were the reason Coutts chose not to offer him another loan after he paid off his mortgage. No bank is obliged to lend. But Coutts did not prevent him from putting enough money into his deposit accounts to meet the criteria. He chose not to do so. That's on him, and that's why they closed his accounts. Coutt's analysis of the reputational risk he posed to them was spot on. They also accurately forecast that he would return to front-line politics. And although they did not find evidence of shady financial activity, they thought it was a risk. We now know they were right.

He said "Israel has the right to defend herself...It has THAT right (to defend herself) provided it falls within International Law." It was the interjection by Ferrari part way through this reply to the previous question that caused the confusion

@Torryder @lana_burner @SangitaMyska @mikegalsworthy You are rewriting history by pretending Starmer merely misspoke and didn’t do enough to condemn Israel. He’s spent 2 1/2 years excusing Israeli war crimes, not to mention providing intelligence, training and materiel to the IDF and smearing and criminalising pro-Palestinians.

Labour’s rewriting of history is quite something. The main problem was NOT that Labour was “too slow to call for a ceasefire” as Andy Burnham & Yvette Cooper now say it is. The problem was Starmer, a human rights lawyer, saying Israel cutting off water and electricity was acceptable - and taking 9 days to correct the record. Ongoing UK intelligence, military & trade co-operation during a genocide Ministers refusing to listen to surgeons trying to advocate for killed/maimed children Backing Trump & Netanyahu without question for almost two years. The list goes on and on and on….

@Torryder @lana_burner @SangitaMyska @mikegalsworthy On LBC, Starmer supported Israel starving Palestinians. 9 days later, he claims he misspoke and was answering a previous question. Other interviews at that time provide wider context as to whether his explanation is credible.

@of_elwher @lana_burner @SangitaMyska @mikegalsworthy Because the original accusation was that he stated he supported the withholding of water and food. It's not rewriting history to say "he didn't". Few would argue with you to say he wasn't vocal enough against Israels actions, without accusing him of saying something he didn't.

Even hawkish Labour MPs now admit Starmer's unconditional support for Israel was wrong, so I don't know why you're so desperate to rewrite history.

@of_elwher @SangitaMyska @mikegalsworthy Sorry, have to agree to disagree there. I agree he could (should) have been more forthright in saying it did NOT include the right to deny food/water. But he never said it DID. I accept others have a different interpretation, but I don't agree with them.

@Torryder @SangitaMyska @mikegalsworthy It wasn’t just the LBC interview. That was the one that caught everyone’s attention, but Starmer’s excuse that he was answering a previous question doesn’t explain all the other interviews where he expressed similar opinions.

Respectfully, I disagree with your (and many others) interpretation of what he said. However, I appreciate I won't change anyone's mind, especially not on this forum.

@Frances_Coppola Some people mentioned to me that the subject of the press article post dated the Coutts debacle. I had said that it is entirely possible thar this wasn't Farage's first foray into questionable money transactions.
