Hospitality is a promise of safety, not just a transaction for a key. If a guest is stranded at night, the technical cause of the "error" matters far less than the host's failure to provide the shelter they were paid for. Keeping her money while she pays for a hotel isn't just bad business, it's a total lack of empathy.

This woman rented an Airbnb in France, after she arrived from the airport, she goes upstairs to open the French door with the key the owner provided. For the life of her, every time she turns it and tried to open the the door, it wouldn’t open. She assumes it’s broken, calls the landlord who then questions her if she’s American. He says he will get to it in the morning, in the meantime she has to check into a hotel. She wants a refund for the night she couldn’t stay there but he’s refusing and claiming it’s user error. Should he have to pay her back for the hotel she had to rent?
