The sacred Hemakuta Hill at Hampi is home to nearly thirty shrines and mandapas enclosed within a cyclopean fortification, with important early temples located on its northern slope. The complex, accessed through gateways from the east and north, contains sandstone temples dating to the 9th–10th century C.E., reflecting Rashtrakuta and later Hoysala architectural influences. The temples include ekakuta and trikuta shrines with garbhagriha, antarala, and navaranga plans, many crowned with Dravida-style or Kadamba Nagara superstructures. Notable among them is the Prasanna Virupaksha Temple (1398 C.E.), identified through an inscription nearby. (1/2)
