My message to the US & Israel is that it’s high time to end the war – as human suffering deepens, civilian casualties mount & the global economic impact is increasingly devastating. 1. There is no chance Iran will agree to these conditions and the longer the US holds out for them the more costs and pain everyone will endure. 2. In the short term at least, limits on Iran's nuclear program, ballistic missiles, support for proxies and threat to the Strait are all more likely to be ensured through deterrence and prevention than with a comprehensive, formal agreement, and the sooner we recognize that the better off we will be. 3. A narrow agreement to stop the war and open the Strait would provide immediate relief and at least as good a basis for a future "deal" as escalation, and Trump could still "declare victory" given how far Iran's nuclear and military capability has already been set back. 4. By contrast, escalating the war in pursuit of unachievable goals will raises costs to the point that even the progress against Iran's military forces will be impossible to defend. 5. For now, the US, Israel, and increasingly the Gulf states have war aims that are understandable but unachievable, and calls to pursue them at all costs to demonstrate US power, preserve credibility, and permanently remove any threat from Iran will have the opposite effect.
