Wow. Looks like a second Canadian shipyard expressed interest in the project.
It increasingly appears BC Ferries deliberately structured the bidding process in a way so that Canadian companies - who had the capability to build the ships - had no chance of being selected.

So it seems that Seaspan wasn’t the only Canadian shipyard critical of BC Ferries’ bid process- Aug 1. letter from Davie Shipyard: “B.C. Ferries has claimed a lack of interest from Canadian suppliers in bidding for this project. However, given that this was the largest non-governmental ship procurement in recent Canadian history, Davie was extremely interested and pre-qualified specifically for the Spirit Class ferries- the vessels central to this review. Unfortunately, the procurement criteria were heavily weighted toward the lowest price, effectively favouring Chinese shipyards.”

The Liberals and NDP are trying to gaslight Canadians into accepting that the $600 million taxpayer subsidy to BC Ferries (to purchase ships from a state-owned shipyard in China) is somehow justified because “there were no Canadian bids”.

This CHEK report cites voices who specialize in Batten disease who are disagreeing with the provincial government's assertions about this issue, which lends credibility to what the family has been saying.
The province is treating this issue as if the discontinuation criteria is not in question, but the criteria very much seems to be a matter of debate in the view of those who have experience treating this condition.
This also doesn't address exactly who made the assessment that is being relied upon to determine that the child has met those criteria, and how it could be possible her medical team was making recommendations contrary to those findings.

@elenoresturko Several years ago a woman suffering with postpartum depression was assessed by a hospital psychiatrist who then released her to return home. Proviso being that the grandmother had to always make sure the mother was never alone with the baby. You can guess what happened to baby.
