@Starkian7789 Yes. The bigger difference is that none of these states are an "idea." Nations carved out by colonial powers with the most arbitrary borders ever - Pakistan and Nigeria - are allowed a national identity based on blood. The US, on the other hand, is an "idea" anyone can join.

@john_st_helen @superfluous_man @shagbark_hick @abrasaxjones I'm Chinese and dance to Spanish music in the street. But I was born in a megacity. Yet, I would join Eastern star (women free masonry) if they didn't constantly do expensive stuff and pressure people to do it. If there was a lower cost version I would join.

@superfluous_man @shagbark_hick @abrasaxjones I look back at the 50s and see all kinds of social clubs that were going around in small towns and big cities alike. That is the Anglo tradition. And towns were pretty distinct. The internet and the move of young people to big cities, in particular, has destroyed this I think.

Hickman and VB have excellently articulated what may be perhaps the great issue of our time, at least as far as public and private life within the United States is concerned: the tragedy of the anticommons. We have taken the grand curve toward interiority of the past several millennia to an extreme by which there is nearly nothing left but interior space. In place of the agora, the polis, there is a sort of place without place, a cheap, mean, and inhospitable default. In place of the commons there is an anticommons.

Incredible post. "In the 18th century, he went into the bush to express it. In the 21st, he opposes sidewalks and libraries, lobbies for bigger parking lots at the Shopping Center, demands increased speed limits on parkways, and protests the installation of bike lanes and park benches. In both cases, an obsessive pursuit of an "escape from civis" is the driving psychological factor."

@Empty_America Yeah, the idea of being 40 and then landing a wholesome trad 22-year-old is pure fantasy outside of some insular mormon communities in Utah. It's cope for not doing the normal thing and romancemaxxing 16-25 until you find your wife.

@Empty_America Yep. Seems like the “40+ guy absolutely slaying 18-25 women” is complete cope by “our guys.” I literally never encounter it. Longhouse strictly polices it. Ive only known one guy like this. He’s 31 and dating a 23 year old and he is absolutely reviled at his job because of it.

In reality, a man's "market value" peaks about the same time as a women's does. As a man, your best odds of landing a really desirable partner are when *you* are ages 18-25. Think about it for a minute, you will see I am right.

@LibertyCappy Used to be 15% for restaurant meal. In NYC you would double the tax and so give 8.875% x 2 = 17.75% tip

The main shtick of Trumpism is to get white people to repeat 90s era black nationalist rumors about immigrants, like the DC plan aka the great replacement, and repeating conscious rap lyrics and hotep memes about "kings" with the skin color switched up.

This is word for word what black American nationalists said about Arab bodegas and Chinese takeout in the 1980s. People I knew were convinced that the government gave non US citizens loans specifically to open stores in black neighborhoods.

@bumbadum14 @constans They say this about Chinese restaurants and Arab owned Bodegas and the loans are allegedly specifically for non US citizens to open stores in black neighborhoods.

@constans You know that black nationalists believe that Chinese restaurants get special loans for non US citizens to open restaurants in black neighborhoods. I used to hear this in the 1980s from black nationalists along with "this is why you people are so rich".

Why isn’t every corner dive bar owned by Indians if there’s a conspiracy by the government to give secret loans to non whites?

Indians’ use of caste is an interesting social technology . White kids are like “I have no idea what I’m doing, maybe I’ll be an astronaut or a a fireman” but Indian kids are like “I was born to operate hotels. My last name is literally hotelwallah.” Makes life easier.

@postcyborg I mean the number of locations in Spain that translate to "dead muslims", "kill all Muslims" or "Jew burnings" is something in the range of 100 and during Easter they have a traditional drink called "kill the Jews." The celebration of the violence of the reconquista is wild.

@Empty_America Why would they stop having hustle? (I've heard about a dearth of black owned businesses as the city version of this). Has the hipster revolution made WASPs more entrepreneurial as they "immigrated" to Brooklyn?

One reason that rural areas with entirely old stock white populations and no immigrants often stagnate horribly is this lack of any business drive. The population doesn't just naturally know to develop a product, make a product, and sell a product. No "hustle" at all.

As a wild generalization, we can say that the longer a family has been in America, the less likely they are to have any concept of engaging in small business. This applies to both higher end people like WASPs and "Hillbilly" families alike.
Elise Makia@Hopperfan

@Empty_America Interesting. I always saw entrepreneurialism as just baked into the cake of American childhood. In my family, there was a “even if you start a business, you must first go to college” (which I disagree with), but the option was always there nonetheless.

@Treerat93 @koko8971 @HMBrough_ The Chinese weren’t allowed to be equal members of society to the extent that Jews were until relatively recently, so there’s not as much to really appreciate. 19th and early 20th century Chinese immigrants are just know for doing some coolie work and maybe the Siamese twins. 😔

The thing about Hillbilly Elegy is, most people who said they read the book, never did, and just said they did to sound attentive to Middle America. When in fact it's one of the most elitist, contemptuous books you could possibly read about Middle America.
george@idobadtakes

HILLBILLY ELEGY is not about how the Appalachian underclass is poor and suffering from globalism. Vance argued that despite tons of government subsidies and plenty of opportunities for work they are poor and addicted to drugs due to their cultural and moral failings
