The Hawthorn is a mysterious 🌳 and a magical 🌳 In the Ogham script developed nearly two millennia ago, but based on an ancient belief system, the 🌳 is represented by Huath, a word derived from Uath which meant fear or terror. In spite of this the Hawthorn has so much positivity attached to it. The 🍒 which are slowly starting to develop (DON'T eat the seeds) were once believed to be a cure for a broken 💔 and science has now caught up with folklore and we know that they are in fact good for the ❤️ & blood circulation. This beautiful Hawthorn 🌳 is growing at a very special place known as the Holestone. An ancient standing stone 🪨 atop a fairy rath in County Antrim. Couples pledge their undying love for one another at this place although it is the woman who must reach through to grasp her partner's hand as the legend is that the stone will only accept female hands 🤝 (although it does seem to be the size of the hole that dictates this rather than the magic of the site) Hawthorns are often found to grow in the most magical ✨ of places....on the edges...in the corners. All the places where magic happens. 🌳🌳🌿❤️🌿🌳🌳

@MoonPlanter Umm. I'm no expert on pruning mature trees so it might be worth contacting the tree team at Dorset Council and asking them - they're usually quite responsive to emails. I've read that Sorbus are best summer pruned so this might explain the timing.

After some advice please? This tree has just been ‘pruned’ by the Council and I’m not too sure what to think of the result. I’m an ex-tree surgeon, RHS trained, (20+ years ago) and everything is telling me this was wrong, but is there some new learning I’m not aware of? BTW, I think it was a Wild Service tree. @rhs @IoloWilliams2 @ForestryComm @TreesforDorset

Finishing the top binding to a hazel hurdle~adding in a rod to every upright secures the top and adds a nice twist appearance at the same time. Joins in to a little cleft chestnut pale picket fence I did last week. Hard to imagine this was once a hideous line of leylandii.

As the coppiced Hazel is slowly drying out it’s nice to turn to Sweet Chestnut to work with at this time. Still easy and a joy to cleave~a gate cleft from a single stem and some extras for the pales. That’s the beauty with it~a small amount can go a long way. Copper Rose heads👌🏻

A quick video to illustrate the wood in spring after it’s been coppiced and all wood and brash has been removed to allow maximum regeneration.

#NationalHedgerowWeek coincides with #PlantHealthWeek – how perfect! We all need to do our bit to support hedgerow health, and sometimes that just involves knowing what to look for, and then letting others know!

People's Trust for Endangered Species
Connectivity within a hedge is very important. 🌳🌳🌳 Hedges often get gaps when they are managed in the same way for too long, such as being trimmed to the same height each year, rather than manged on their lifecycle #NationalHedgerowWeek

As I understand it’s #NationalHedgerowWeek This hedge delivers multiple benefits It only really works with what is adjacent to it, species rich flower margins and cultivated areas for our plants It’s all about diversity in landscape Btw there’s also food production😉

Making the most of a flaw in the timber; embracing and working with it, rather than cutting it out. A typically playful, almost hidden (and undoubtedly off the cuff) detail from a bespoke oak cabinet I worked on with my father many years ago. (Image recently unearthed)
