@aeroweanie @DrHelenFry The Corsair was first used on carriers by the Royal Navy in 1943, who made a series of modifications to the plane to make it safer to operate at sea. These modifications eventually filtered back to the US Navy, and helped with the aircraft’s qualification for American ships.

@DrHelenFry The F4U Corsair failed carrier qualification trials in Sept 1942 and Mar 1943 due to poor stall characteristics, landing gear bounce, insufficient directional control at low-speed, high-power conditions and poor cockpit visibility on approach. It finally passed in Apr 1944.

One of the more charming aspects of the American mindset has been that so many people who objectively are working class or upper class answer poll questions about their class as "middle." If there is a genre I truly hate in the @nytimes it's the frequent pieces featuring folks with multi-millions in assets and multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars in yearly household income describing themselves as middle class, and being credulously understood that way, while professionals with healthy six figure incomes engage in poverty larping because, of course, if these other people are "middle class" then they must themselves be "poor" or "working class" or "just getting by."
