The worst week of my life happened exactly five months ago. It went something like this: Wednesday: Host an all-hands call to announce changes in ENG leadership. Thursday: My unborn daughter dies two weeks before her delivery date. We almost lost my wife in the process. Saturday: We return home from the hospital after sleepless nights. Sunday: I wake up to an unexpected resignation email (effective immediately) from a key exec on my team. …all while running a fundraising process from a hospital room. I couldn’t grieve. Somehow I showed up to work on Monday morning to start the rebuild. What are we supposed to do when our grief has to come to work with us? Grief isn’t limited to a weekend or timeline. In my experience, it comes in waves and seemingly out of nowhere. I’ll carry my daughter with me for the rest of my life. I appreciated the opportunity to talk about my struggle with trauma and grief as an early-stage founder with Jolie Shapiro on her new podcast, Revenue Mind. Why did I speak out on this? In private DMs from many of you, this community has shown me that I’m NOT alone. My hope is that someone can hear my story—and know they’re not alone either. Grief can be incredibly isolating. But it doesn’t have to be. Thank you to those who have reached out, been vulnerable with me in MY most vulnerable moments, and to those who have held our family in their thoughts and prayers and homes as we continue to heal and grieve. Business IS personal. It’s a bunch of humans doing life and navigating joy and grief together. Be excellent to each other.

No wrong answers here. Just curious Would you hire a family counselor who has never had a family? Would you hire someone who specializes in child development but doesn’t have children? Would you hire someone who has never drank to help with an alcohol addiction?
