What do you believe is causing the middle class being so squeezed? My personal belief is that it’s largely cause by technology and debt. Technology- As an entrepreneur for 20 years, I’m gobsmacked at how I can grow a business faster than ever today without hiring many people. I have a business that serves 8500+ paying customers and we have a team of 35. Not long ago it would have required 100+. Adjusted for inflation, it took 8 people in the year 2000 to generate $1M of revenue on the S&P500. Today it’s less than 2. At the same time, the “magnificent 7” is worth half the S&P500 and have added trillions to their market value each year this decade. This is going to accelerate with AI. Debt - lots of people took cheap mortgages in the 2010s when interest rates were sub 3% and now those rates have doubled. It’s not just individuals, governments and Private Equity firms did the same. In the next 2 years over 20% of UK government bonds will need to roll over to higher interest payments. To make these payments they’ll have to inflate the currency - causing real assets to rise and purchasing power to drop. The bottom 50% of the UK / US economy pays ~3% of the taxes so there’s not much they can do to ease this. The top 10% is already paying 60% of the taxes and threatening to leave if it goes higher. So that’s why theres a squeeze!

UK energy is 4x more expensive than US energy. That's before Trump starts drilling for more. All of this is purely academic. No AI companies are coming to the UK to pay 400% energy bills AND have their staff pay 45% tax and pay 15% NI. Here's what IS going to happen - the USA is going to have cheap energy and lower taxes and the talented British AI people are going to get special visas to move to the USA. Trump is playing to win it all, not to divide the pie - he's just announced $500B funding to do this. If the UK wants to be part of the AI revolution, we need cheap energy and lower taxes. Until those two things happen, we can have all the debates in the world about where to put a data centre but it's not happening.
Nick Timothy MP@NJ_Timothy

Behold the socialist logic that drives our suicidal energy policies. Chris Stark, put in charge of decarbonising the Grid by Ed Miliband, says data centres vital for AI must be located not where it suits business, or where tech workers are, but where it suits the Grid (1/6).

Today we visited our link school in Peru, Berkeley School. The children were so enthusiastic to share information about their culture including the fruit, traditional food and their history. It was wonderful to meet them all.

Now the budget is done, I’ll shut up about it. I’m a believer that we should only put energy into things that we can influence - it’s now past that point. What do I think of it? - £40B sucked out of the real economy, that will be used to service irresponsible debt and create more. That sucks. - Freezing the tax bands while inflation still moves up IS a tax on working people. - Taxing farmers to hand their farms over to the next generation is a threat to food security long term. - Raising the cost of hiring a person in the UK more, IS a tax on working people. - CGT going up by 20-80% is a good reason not to invest in the UK. - 1p off a pint is basically a joke. It shows you what they think of the British public. It’s the kind of thing they'd do if they believe we are all broke morons who shuffle down the pub for our petty source of joy and meaning. They’ve made the UK a less attractive, less enjoyable, less secure, less affluent place. They’ve chipped away at people’s ability to build wealth and independence. They’ve grown the state to its most bloated size in generations. What more would we expect from socialists? Is it so bad that people will get up and leave? Probably not in droves. With that said, if you can easily leave the UK, remember that there are 50+ countries that have a digital nomad visa. You now cost 15% less to an employer if you are a remote/overseas contractor. If you can live somewhere lovely and turn your British employer into your first consulting contract, it’s a win/win for you both. It’s a big wide world out there and most places do not treat their people with such contempt.
