Driving home from work tonight, the freeway came to a total standstill. California Highway Patrol cars and sheriff’s Tahoes were flying down the shoulder at high speed. At first, I figured it was a massive accident. Then my mind jumped to what I heard last week from real estate guys turned chaos negotiators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner—that Iran could have a nuclear bomb in as little as a week. I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is it—Iran just hit us with nukes.’ Crawling along at maybe one mile an hour, I finally saw the cause: some car had drifted off to the side, probably a texter being an idiot. Thank God it wasn’t Iran.

When Heidi Fleiss ( “Madam Hollywood”) was arrested in 1993 for operating a high-end prostitution ring serving wealthy and celebrity clients in Hollywood, and then served her prison sentence, IRS agents were right there at the prison gates on her release day to arrest her for tax evasion. Back then, I viewed the IRS as the most efficient and sophisticated agency around. But decades later, with fraud scandals emerging every day, I find myself wondering: Where was the IRS when con artists were siphoning off hundreds of billions, or when a Somali immigrant is cruising in a Mercedes, his whole family on government assistance, while he’s wiring tens of thousands back to his home country? I recall how the Soros/Biden administration planned to hire 87,000 new IRS agents to scrutinize things like a plumber getting a $600 Zelle payment for a weekend side gig. In the end, it’s not just our law enforcement that’s failed— the IRS has shown itself to be yet another ineffective bureaucracy.
