This is absolutely heartbreaking—and infuriating. Romello Maxwell, an inmate at the Genesee County Jail in Michigan, has been charged with assaulting Josie, a 13-month-old spaniel who served as a comfort dog at the jail. Josie reportedly suffered a concussion and an injury to one of her eyes after being attacked while simply doing what she was trained to do: providing comfort and support. She weighed less than 15 pounds. A defenseless little dog. Hurt while trying to comfort the very people she was brought there to help. And I have to say it: Why are we putting innocent animals at risk to provide comfort and support to inmates in the first place? Inmates do not need comfort dogs. These animals should be helping traumatized children, veterans, victims of violent crime, hospital patients, or others who desperately need that companionship—not being placed in situations where they could be harmed. This is INSANE. Josie deserved protection, too. 💔🐾
