UPDATE: Letters from Leo can now independently confirm that the meeting took place — and that the Vatican was so alarmed by the Pentagon’s tactics that Pope Leo XIV shelved plans to visit the United States later this year. Many in the Vatican saw the Pentagon’s reference to an Avignon papacy as a threat to use military force against the Holy See.
Christopher Hale@ChristopherHale

NEW: A stunning new report claims that the Pentagon summoned Pope Leo XIV’s top American diplomat and threatened him after the U.S.-born pontiff gave his January state-of-the-world address. Leo used the address to denounce a world ruled by “a diplomacy based on force” and “zeal for war.” thelettersfromleo.com/p/the-pentagon…

The NYT is reporting that Iran, in addition to gaining administrative control over the Strait of Hormuz, will now charge $2m per ship for safe passage, which it will split with Oman. It was free pre-war. Trump & Netanyahu have increased Iranian leverage over the global economy.

So if you're keeping score at home, the ceasefire includes Lebanon but also doesn't include Lebanon, America has agreed to all of Iran's demands and Iran has agreed to all of America's demands, America will recognize Iran's right to enrichment and also insist on zero enrichment, Hormuz is completely open but also Hormuz is subject to unclear limitations... There are a lot of confident predictions about a deal that is still unclear and unfinished Both sides are scrambling to portray this as a war-ending victory when there's a decent chance that the war hasn't even ended

WSJ: "Mr. Vance likes to say Europe should play the leading role in supporting Ukraine, since Ukraine doesn’t matter to the U.S.—yet Mr. Orbán is obstructing a European financial plan to do exactly that. The Hungarian is also trying to deepen commercial ties with China." wsj.com/opinion/jd-van…

In the best case scenario, Trump struck a deal to reopen a Strait that was open before the pointless war he started, with the IRGC demonstrating its control over the Strait and potentially extracting fees plus sanctions relief. Thousands of innocents - including hundreds of children - dead in Lebanon and Iran for no reason. U.S. troops killed and wounded. U.S. embassies and bases in the Middle East badly damaged. U.S. standing in the world obliterated. U.S. munitions badly depleted. Hundreds of billions spent. Prices up everywhere. More global economic fallout to come. Putin strengthened and enriched. Just a catastrophic situation even in the best of circumstances. A profoundly shameful episode in American history no matter what happens next.

@mehdirhasan Your point is foolish; Zelensky is not “supporting” the attack on Iran, but calling for peace in the Gulf and a UN-mediated resolution of the Strait of Hormuz crisis. Equating Ukraine with Iran is absurd.

It's astonishing that you, a world leader who many respected for standing up to an illegal attack on your country, now support an illegal attack on another country. It completely kills your credibility. Right now. Iran is Ukraine. You may not like to hear that but that is a fact
Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський@ZelenskyyUa

It is unfortunate that the UN Security Council has once again failed to demonstrate effectiveness and act decisively in the face of such a global threat as the Iranian regime's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. No one should be allowed to block such globally significant sea lanes or undermine the security of dozens of nations through terrorist attacks against the freedom of navigation. We faced a similar challenge in the Black Sea when the Russians attempted to block our ports and civilian shipping—Russia was trying to suffocate our economy. And we found a way to solve that problem through decisive action, not inaction. Now, we see a similar problem on a global scale. The Strait of Hormuz must remain open to all vessels that sustain vital economy lifelines and maintain normal international trade. Countries in the region have spoken clearly on this, and we support the aspirations of the people of the Middle East and the Gulf for peace. Peace and security in this region directly impact stability, market predictability, and the cost of living in every single country. Such problems and this war must not be prolonged. The world needs a functional UNSC that acts more decisively to resolve acute security challenges of global magnitude.

For the first time in decades, Chinese influence in Latin America is receding. The so called “Chile-China Express” submarine cable in Chile has been suspended. Peru chose American F16s instead of China's JF17. Colombia has announced tariffs on Chinese steel. Mexico is reviewing its economic agenda with Beijing. Honduras could soon even reactivate its relationship with Taiwan. thehill.com/opinion/intern…

You may wonder why the Europeans aren't responding more forcefully to JD Vance in Budapest 1/ Because Orban looks set to lose & any EU intervention could be counterproductive 2/ Because the US is so far beyond the pale - Greenland, Iran, Ukraine etc. The EU is quietly moving on
David Axelrod@davidaxelrod

This is truly unprecedented. A vice president of the United States wading hip deep in another country's election. And he is doing it on behalf of Viktor Orban, the autocratic prime minister of Hungary, whose efforts to gut democracy there were a template for @realDonaldTrump's here.

The talks that are set to commence on Friday will be based on Iran's 10-point plan and not Trump's 15-point plan. That, in and of itself, is a significant achievement for Iran.

According to a statement from U.S. President Donald J. Trump on his Truth Social app, following requests by key Pakistani decision-makers to extend the deadline for strikes on Iranian energy and power infrastructure, he has agreed to a two-week ceasefire, where he has agreed to “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran.” Per the president, this is two-sided ceasefire, but it remains to be seen whether or not Iran will hold up their side of the deal.
