@mfc248 @mid_madness Thanks for sending. Scholarship allowance would not be the defining block . Obviously it would never happen, but for example, AU joined the PL and offered scholarships while the rest of the league did not (except 🏀). Ivie's wrestled in EIWA . 🏒 in ECAC

@Tsmith47 @mid_madness Below is a short thread with the specifics. You’ll notice the timing, early 1991; it’s likely that the rules were put in to prevent the Patriot League situation being repeated.
🇺🇸 Matt Carberry 🇺🇦@mfc248

So long as the @IvyLeague maintains its hard line on “no athletics aid,” the pool of candidates for expansion is very small. The reason — @NCAA Division I Bylaw 20.9.3.2. That’s where the minimum requirements of financial aid for D-1 membership are located. 1/

@mfc248 @mid_madness Regarding your point about scholarships, So the patriot league was once “grandfathered” as well? What about schools that d1 but aren’t fully funded in many sports?

@mid_madness I get a good laugh whenever someone tongue in cheek suggests that a power conference school should join the Ivy League. That’s prohibited under current NCAA rules; the Ivies are exempted from D1 minimum scholarship requirements by a grandfather clause.

@Tsmith47 @Memn077 @kennyfgan Guy didn’t play football in high school. I know he’s an exception & so is my daughter. But playing D1 or at any high level after HS is the exception even w/ travel The difference in divisions in college is based on scholarships.

Middle America families stuck in the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time that is travel baseball. Baseball needs Legion Ball played at high school fields in t-shirts and gray pants more than ever right now.

Sandlot it ain't. Youth sports now $40 B industry: "Teenagers on travel teams are rolling into weekend tournaments wearing a few thousand dollars of apparel, equipment & swag. Avg family spending on baseball increased nearly 70% between 2019 and 2024." wsj.com/business/retai…

@CiacciaKri2307 @Memn077 @kennyfgan Football is a different beast. HS is still king. You cant cite your example as saying you dont need travel sports because its not true. Outside of random outlier, no one on a top FH team in college played "only" HS.

@Tsmith47 @Memn077 @kennyfgan I personally know a guy (now in his late 30s) who walked onto the Penn State football team, played in games & was drafted to the Bengals. Guy was a natural athlete. No travel sports but played 3 hrs sports. Great athletes can excel without travel.

@CiacciaKri2307 @Memn077 @kennyfgan it actually doesnt meant that and it's weird to say "olympic level" as a comparsion. No one says that. Ivy League schools are d1 and dont give scholarships. Until fairly recently, patriot league schools did not give athletic scholarships.

@Tsmith47 @Memn077 @kennyfgan D1 doesn’t mean the teams are olympic level. The designation refers to the amount of the scholarship award. There are some D2 & D3 programs that are super competitive but their awards are far less & D3 doesn’t give athletic scholarships.

@Tsmith47 @Memn077 @kennyfgan Totally true. Not a top D1 program, but scholarship helped make school possible. Honestly, she’s just a really talented athlete. Also, we stayed out of the process & met the coach after she committed. I think her maturity & grit helped.

Regulating youth sports is so stupid. Especially this slopulism that is “no private equity” allowed. We need to just build and maintain more proper soccer fields everywhere kids are, especially low SES areas. Let every kid play. Adults get every kid playing. Do it with tort reform. Lawsuits and liability protection is the real cost driver in youth sports.

@Memn077 @kennyfgan My daughter never played travel (FH) & just played for the school. We didn’t do the expensive camps. She played other sports for fun for the school. She went D1. Her scholarship makes it possible for her to be at her college. Good athletes get found

@ericdbriggs @MCameron008 That statement is very much level dependent. There are outliers of course, but kids who play on clubs at the highest level available to them, rarely play another sport. Especially another team sport (excluding kicker).

@MCameron008 Here in Tx UIL and club do a pretty good job of staggering their seasons so kids can play both. In high school i know of countless players who play multiple sports. Soccer and football skills overlap well and coaches realize that.

What’s the difference between a HS student athlete not being allowed to play 2 HS sports simultaneously, and soccer players not being allowed to play HS and club simultaneously?

@Tsmith47 Hi Travis. (Thank you!) I knew that the ODP used to have this policy, but also thought they gave it up when parents pushed back. It’s news to me that this has been true at the highest levels.

@IHateSoccerPod Not sure if you are joking or not, but I could get a ticket for well under 800 on StubHub for every Bills home game I selected.

World Cup 3rd place game tickets are only $800. If I only went to one game that’s what I’d go to. It’s cheap too. Can’t get into a Bills home game for $800.

@rumbleseatbar @Adam__Clinch Everything is dependent on situational context. Your anecdotal evidence supports one version, while painting with a broad brush for the other. But if you think parents dont have influence on a top club, thats a rare experience.

Depends on the club level. The top level high school aged team in a club has a huge focus on winning and doesn’t care much about parents opinion. Especially at the u17-u18 age level because the kids are aging out. If the club isn’t big enough that they have a competitive demand to reach the top team then yes, they will play more players to make parents happy at the younger ages because they want them to sign up again and write a check.

The US has been so focused on acting like Europe regarding club, we've slept hard on how much we could be leveraging what we have that they don't, and that's high school ball & the unique connection people feel to their school & community. You'll never ever see this for club.

@WSWayland @JackedBasedMgr Ive done both. The marathon was fun and it was gut check during the last 6 miles. Very rewarding. But the process of getting ready was linear. Bench took way longer with many stops along the way. It required years of lifting, trial and error, plateaus and problem solving.

@WSWayland Why do you just say running a marathon without a time but you include a weight target for a bench ?

@Adam__Clinch The problem will always be the parents. We have had high school coaches removed for not playing everyone on the roster here in Western MA. Everyone getting a trophy mentality in high school sports vs play the best in top level club.
