@TroySweezey @The_Davos_Man Because beating Russia in Ukraine is needed for preventing World War 3 and eventually sending massive amounts of American troops to fight. You fumbled this exact thing in World Wars 1 and 2 already. Be smarter this time.

@The_Davos_Man So why exactly should the U.S. do anything for Ukraine?

And the point of democracy is that everyone gets a voice and the chance to convince others into cooperation. The Finnish leftists got that. Nobody owes any political group a revolution just because they fail to get their point across democratically. I mean, you wouldn't say it was OK for Trump to get Russian help to sway the election in his favor, would you? Finland wasn't some right-wing dictatorship. It was a Western democracy already before and during (and after) the war, which is why France and the UK planned intervening in the Winter War, and even the US refused to get involved against Finland in the Continuation War. As it happens, we also had a Fascist movement that attempted a revolution in 1932, like in many other European countries. Guess what happened? It fizzled out, because it didn't have popular support. Stalin's original intention was to bring Finland under Soviet control. It doesn't really make a difference whether that would have meant a full annexation or a puppet regime. Now, he did manage a very uncomfortable compromise where Finland couldn't openly join NATO after the war, but that couldn't have been his intention, as NATO wasn't a thing in 1939. Ryti's and Mannerheim's vision was maintaining Finnish sovereignty and democracy. That was actualized. Was Finland led exactly the way they personally would have preferred? Nobody cares. As for stagnation, it was the USSR that was stagnated so badly that the damage is still very clearly visible in former Soviet republics. Go ahead and compare Finland to any of them by any statistic you want.

@TuoreetPyssyt @Sarcastagasm_2 @The_Clermontian @accipiter0 Regarding leftists, the difference you’re describing is that of hell and purgatory. It’s a nicer alternative, but the whole point of politics and revolution is ultimately manifesting your will. Finland got invaded because it wasn’t hard to predict 100 years of stagnation.

Revisionism around the Winter War gets tiring at a point. It was an absurdly impressive performance by the Finnish Army, and an absurdly embarassing performance by the Red Army.

Yes, but "this setback came with an unexpected minor benefit" is not the same as "this was the whole plan all along". Also, "leftists were at risk of being sent to camps and had no influence in politics" is very different than "they never won a single-party majority or turn the country socialist".

The reason why the Reds turned against the USSR was because the USSR launched an indiscriminate terror campaign against Finnish civilians, including firebombing Red neighborhoods. The society did have a White bias, but you're exaggerating it. Most Reds, apart from the leaders, were pardoned very soon after the war. The Social Democratic Party - the party that started the civil war - actually held more seats in the Finnish parliament during the interwar period than at any point in the 21st century.

@Sarcastagasm_2 @The_Clermontian @accipiter0 During the revolution the Finns had their own civil war. Their white movement won, purged leftists, and was dominated by reactionary politics. When the war ended, Finland conceded by defanging that movement and moderating. That was the point of wanting to conquer them.

@Melitaalsole @CherryBomb_Kiko Their allocated army failed to reach their set goals in Finland, and would have needed significant reinforcements to continue. Their main opponent was Nazi Germany of course, but it's not like they just decided to ignore Finland.

@TuoreetPyssyt @CherryBomb_Kiko Maybe learn basic comprehension. It's obviously referring to the Winter and Continuation Wars 🫠 It wasn't so much saving itself as it was the USSR deciding to focus on Nazi Germany instead.

The movie is called Tali-Ihantala 1944 and is set during the battle of Tali-Ihantala during the Continuation War. It's not a good movie, it does not have any main characters or plot. It does however have authentic wartime vehicles and some of the best replicas on film and it tries to realistically recreate the battle. It's as if a groups of reenactors without any previous film experience shoot a war movie. I believe one of the StuGs in this clip actually participated in the battle.

@TallbarFIN Back when communism fell, the only people who had any experience, training, or public visibility in politics, were the former communists. So, even though they switched their ideology, many of the same people remained in top positions or at least got a head start.

Why are so many southeastern European countries, which have won their freedom from Soviet oppression, so eager to return to being russian vassals? Is their memory so short? Can't they see what russia is? As a Finn, I simply can't understand.

@cpscott16 The conspiracy theorist in me is beginning to think that the US regime is doing all this random warmongering specifically so that they'd get a chance to complain how Europe is not helping and NATO should be dismantled.

Just a reminder: in 1982, when Great Britain was attacked by Argentina, starting the Falklands War, the United States did not come to their aid because the Falklands are not in the North Atlantic and the British did not bitch about it. In 1956, when the French and British attacked Egypt, causing the Suez Crisis, despite the fact that France and Great Britain are in NATO, the United States not only refused to assist, but went to the United Nations to condemn them for attacking Egypt. In 2019, when Turkey decided to attack Syria, the Trump administration had the Pentagon send out an official notice that they did not support the campaign and would not send troops. So kindly shut the fuck up, everyone in the White House.

While the Soviet invasion of Finland was obviously horrible, it seems clear to me that the Finns should have accepted the Soviet land trade offer They ended up losing way more land despite winning the war!
