@BeastOfTruth Or you can have fundamentally good games that just don’t have mass appeal and vice versa with average games that do have mass appeal Like there’s tons of good games that go under the radar dude. You don’t need hundreds of thousands playing your game for it to be “good”.

The fact that IGN gave Crimson Desert a 6 and Marathon a 9 yet 6 times more gamers choose to play the low scoring game than the one they called "Amazing" shows how out of touch with real gamers these "journalists" are Same guys that have historically promoted Sony games btw 😬

@Hollowtide @MichaelClimek I definitely doubt Sony just went in to blindly buy out Bungie without having a sit down with Bungie top management to see what their plans were for the next years to come I think people are a little naive to think Sony is gonna just shutter their biggest investment to date

@mdeeRocks @Ziegler_Dev I mean what do people want them to do? Outside of having a mode separate for the 1-2 hour players (and I have to ask why are they even playing the game? Certain genres require timesinks and this is one of those games) you can’t do much without changing the foundation

I hope you start thinking about normal players who play 2–3 hours a day (and I don’t mean pure casuals). The game is quickly approaching 100% sweat saturation, and it’s driving regular players away. Contracts like “Dire Marsh in a single run” don’t help either. Maybe it’s worth rethinking the number of teams on the maps?

(update about an update: we have some iterations / big balance changes brewing right now and will talk about it soon) but... OFF TOPIC: I feel like as a kid of the 90s and a person who's worked on PVP FPS games for over a decade, I may have taken the first two lines of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" too much to heart.

@silderfoe @wwarrior_1 There’s not many flaws to it, it’s simply a genre that isn’t attractive to the mass. It’s a pretty damn good extraction shooter The only issue is bungie going into the genre when they needed something that attracts more than what an extraction shooter does

@wwarrior_1 It's 2-5k players on both ps5 and xbox tops. imagine being a bungie who in the past 25 years were making console games first and now no one on console are playing it. it's a deeply flawed game that should be redesigned completely, with console/solo/casual players in mind.

I took the family to see Project Hail Mary last weekend. For 4 of us, it was like $90 all in. That's for like 2 hours of entertainment.... I've got close to 200 hours now out of Marathon and I haven't even got to vault 7 yet, or VIPd every faction, or even come remotely close to every upgrade. That's alot for my $60. Even if it dies after season 1, I'll have gotten more out of this game than most others titles that have lasted a decade. It's a ton of fun and it'll move the genre forward even in the unlikely event it gets the plug pulled.
ExoGhost@ExoGhost

Marathon keeps losing players everyday Game is dead. At this rate, it will be cancelled in a few months. Nobody wants to play it. Those who try to play it quickly realize it's garbage and stop

@Xythiera The only thing I’ll agree on is yes, casuals don’t just become hardcore players. Casuals will always be casuals You do need a draw to bring in new casuals as that’s what makes your game live long term

I disagree wholly. The game is just hard and there are no short cuts. You just have to PLAY. There’s not secret there. You get better by playing, you learn by playing. You get a little tutorial and then warm up rounds on beginning only Perimeter. Each contract, each quest is a lesson. It’s ok to be bad at games. I’m bad. It’s not ok to blame a game you’re bad at for your lack of skill. It’s mirror time.

Exclusive video report: An anonymous source, who sent me a clip of unreleased Halo Campaign Evolved footage to verify themself, gave me new information about Campaign Evolved. This report reveals details about the new prequel missions and confirms Halo Infinite assets are still being reused for the original missions instead of respecting Combat Evolved’s art style. @TheActMan_YT This is why I don’t believe devs give af anymore, they have no job security even when they’re making bank for their studios. Damned if you do damned if you don’t. It’s funny how these companies make record profits and they’ll still layoff people to save some bucks

Battlefield 6 was the best selling game of 2025, all studios that worked on it were hit with layoffs. Fortnite generated $6 billion in revenue in 2025, over 1,000 employees were just laid off. Even at the peak of success, AAA gaming is somehow collapsing rn

@0kElysyum @DarkIxion But I won’t be surprised if D3 is happening with Sony really trying to push it. I kinda think that’s what’s happening in the background But maybe bungie has other plans and we just gotta wait till they announce the new stuff

@0kElysyum @DarkIxion I’m more for destiny being over with myself as I think running the ip for what? 11 years now going into 12 is plenty. Franchise fatigue exists and that includes the devs as well, im sure they wanna make new games entirely At some point ideas run out as well, destiny is there imo

I have a question for the business experts on this app. If Bungie is on life support and Sony is pushing them to claw back the money they apparently lost, how come we don’t have another Eververse situation on our hands? There are virtually no micro-transactions at all, we get one bundle a week and it costs what, £10? Hardly breaking the bank. I mean, I wish they would add more skins to buy, especially with the aesthetic being a huge part of why people love this game. They just aren’t pushing micro-transactions on this game at all, weird for a company apparently heavily in the Red and at risk of liquidation. There are currently 8 bundles that you can buy in the store and 1 standard battle pass, no “black cell” equivalent or option to purchase tier skips. Funny 🧍‍♂️I figured if they were in the Red the way people keep saying they are, they’d actually monetise things? And this is just launch content, thinking long term, they’ll only add more skins, more battle passes, you see actual business experts think about the long term, that’s why they work at Sony and Bungie respectively. 1.2 Million copies sold, that doesn’t entail whether it is standard edition, deluxe edition, or collectors edition, so once again the sales revenue numbers won’t be accurate, if any of the numbers were to begin with. Also, for Bungie to of apparently banked their entire company on developing Marathon for the past six years and they’re heavily in the red, the game is oddly cheap, £40? I mean, if they priced it cheaply because they thought nobody would pay more than that with it being a niche genre, clearly they’re not worried, never expected it to be a massive payout, and have bigger things in development, I.e Destiny 3. The Bungie store is almost always sold out, restocked and sold out again, still waiting on getting the weaveworm plushie but that sells out almost instantly after multiple restocks, which tells you all you need to know, people are buying in troves. This game isn’t going anywhere but go ahead and waste your time staring steam charts all day, I’m at 160 Hours on Marathon and counting. #Marathon

@0kElysyum @DarkIxion I mean I could see some downsizing just cause the game is released anyways, you don’t need 300 devs to produce a new map every few months (what I assume will happen for marathon) and then who knows what new game they’re working on in the meantime. Speculation is Destiny 3

@HomieSanto An indie studio is making money off what marathons doing, bungie isn’t because of the big ass budget they poured into making it It has nothing to do with people’s interests in this type of game and more so that Bungie made the wrong kind of game for the actual return they need

@HomieSanto Like if marathon was made by an indie studio its numbers look far more impressive But because it’s bungie, and was made with a AAA budget that’s where it looks bad. Not because people aren’t interested in these type of games.

Marathon’s bulk sales on Steam tells me two things. 1. Steam Charts are more important than ever, no matter what Journo says. 2. Gamers hold more power and don’t want these kinds of games anymore.

@Arrrrash And because of that, people should enjoy it while the getting is still good. For now they still have active player bases. 5 years from now they might not even exist once these studios have moved onto their next game.

@Arrrrash I think people need to just enjoy the game as it is now while it’s around. I mean live services don’t last forever anyways and there are only exceptions that prolong the inevitable. I personally don’t believe stuff like arc or marathon will even be around 5 years from now

I love Marathon, but I don't think the answer to this is one people really want to hear. Everytime a game drops and underperforms all the players who love it always speculate what x company can do to raise the playerbase. It's never as simple as just doing one thing. I don't think a free weekend would hurt, but it's also worth noting Marathon had a pseudo free weekend when they dropped the server slam right before the game came out. Lot's of those players didn't end up buying the game, and I struggle to see how that would be different this time around. Sure the game has a couple more maps, but most new players aren't going to get to Outpost or definetly Cyro before they end up quitting anyways. TLDR: I think Marathons player base is what it is. Bungie's best bet is likely focusing on retention and maybe slowly over time that can grow as new players trickle in, as long as the existing ones stick around. But does Bungie have the runway to do that funding wise? Idk
Solgob@solgob_

What would be the best way to get new players to try Marathon on the first wipe? Free weekend? PVE only mode? Drop a bundle of Destiny guns in the game? 😂
