Every year, I share this video of French caretakers who take sand from Omaha Beach in Normandy, and scrub them into the letters to give them the gold coloring. They do this for all 9,386 US soldiers who died. France also gave us this land as American soil. #MemorialDayWeekend

Houston's monorail, 1956. Houston has been the site of not one but two monorails. Houston's experiments with monorails were not so much wild flings as they were quick experiments. Picture this: in 1956, a group of folks led by a guy named Murell Goodell decided to roll out America’s first commercial monorail, called the Skyway Line, at Arrowhead Park. Murell was a really interesting guy ---- an engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur. I could write a hole post about him, actually. Anyway, so they built this funky 1,600-foot track with a single car, the Trailblazer, zipping along on truck tires, hanging from a steel rail. It was a beast—20,000 pounds, powered by a 310-horsepower engine, and it could hit a whopping 10 miles an hour. Perhaps the coolest part? It had its own elevator to get passengers up into the car. They were hoping it’d be the next big thing for city transit, but after just seven months, the whole thing fizzled out. People weren’t thrilled enough to ride it, and the money just wasn’t there to keep it going. Then, in 1966, Houston gave it another shot. They dropped half a million bucks on a new monorail to see if the public would bite this time. It was another test run, set up to gauge interest over a couple of years. But, same story—folks didn’t really care, and the project ran out of steam. With its massive, spread-out size, Houston has been a car-centric city for decades. A monorail just didn’t fit the vibe. Both attempts were kind of like cool science projects that never made it to the big leagues. The Trailblazer even got a second life as someone's house in Willis Point, Texas. There are photos of it on the internet if you care to seek them out.
