When you descend the Bitcoin rabbit hole your eyes are opened to many possibilities and you see the corruption that has engulfed you since you were born! Banks are evil. Governments are evil. Wall Street is evil. Politicians are very evil. Broken Money (filthy fiat currency) is the cause of all evil. The UK Bitcoin Master will help you understand this truth if you invest a few minutes in this magnificent video!

Private Messaging: Know Your Tools Your messaging app is listening to you, and soon (if you’re unlucky enough to live in the UK) the government may be listening too. The latest we’re hearing is that there’s quite some support for ‘client side’ scanning of all our messages before they are sent, which essentially would allow the government to see anything you plan to send, before you send it, and in unencrypted form. You can address some of this risk by using a privacy-hardened operating system like @GrapheneOS, and even if you manage to avoid client side scanning by your device, it’s not a bad idea to learn about other messaging apps that are not owned by Meta (like Whatsapp is), not end to end encrypted by default (like Telegram), or simply passing through someone else’s servers and scrutiny. If you want your private conversations to stay private, and to make sure the government doesn’t build up a vast collection of your shared photos, the tools exist to protect yourself and to keep their noses out of your business (you just need to pick the right one). A selection is below, and more details in the @bitcoinpolicyuk Privacy Toolkit (all of these are free, but some need donations if you are feeling generous). @signalapp is fully end-to-end encrypted by default, which means Signal doesn’t see your content (though for full disclosure, they do run their own servers). It's free, and for those who like Whatsapp, it's likely the most user-friendly alternative. @keet_io is newer, but it's doing something rather different. Keet is a peer-to-peer service, with no central servers and no data collection. Much like a bitcoin wallet, you can back up your profile using a seed phrase. If you want comms that literally cannot be seized at the server level, Keet is worth exploring. It's decentralised, resilient, and likely censorship-proof or at the very least censorship resistant. Unlike Signal, WhatsApp or Telegram, @SimpleXChat has no user IDs whatsoever — not a phone number, not an email, not even a random number or cryptographic hash that could ever be tied to you. You connect with someone by sharing a one-time link or QR code (ideally in person or over another secure channel). Once that connection is made, messages are routed through a network of relays in such a way that even the servers themselves have no idea who is talking to whom. Your contacts, groups and entire chat history live only on your device. Getting into hard mode, we can consider Briar (apparently favoured by journalists operating in the toughest and most dangerous locations) and @bitchat_mesh . These run on mesh networks, where no central server means no chokepoint for governments or corporations to exploit, and they can continue running over a Bluetooth mesh even when governments shut down the internet. @whitenoisechat is another interesting and early stage messaging app using the Nostr protocol; again, an uncensorable and even more private and secure alternative to Signal. Note that each of these are either in the early stages of development, or not yet widely used. Because there is an uncomfortable truth to acknowledge here, which is that most of us will use none of these alternatives. You may keep using WhatsApp because your friends and family are on it; you might keep using Telegram because it feels private although it isn't. All of us will to some extent keep trading privacy for convenience. That's fine, if it is truly your choice, and one that’s deliberately made. But even making the move to Signal is an improvement, and the more of us who make those improvements, the less easy it is for governments and companies to spy on us. Your personal data is called personal for a reason; because it is personal to you, and you should be the one who chooses who gets to see it. Never the government.

Privacy, and our basic freedoms, are under attack from all sides. Incredibly, the so-called 'liberal democracies' are now leading these attacks; arresting their own citizens for posting online, rolling out facial recognition cameras, and moving to ban VPNs. "What can men do against such reckless hate?" And are we losing this battle? Absolutely not. There's still time to fight back, and we have much in our arsenal. We at @bitcoinpolicyuk have put together a 'Privacy Toolkit', that should let anyone, whatever their skill level, take a few small steps towards improving their privacy and their freedom, and making themselves just a little bit harder for governments to track and to oppress. This isn't comprehensive, and we'll continue to update it as time goes by. We hope it's useful to everyone and serves as a handy guide to help us all push back against government overreach, wherever we find it. Link in the thread and comments welcome! 👇
