#POTD #Math #Geometry #Advanced Problem of the Day! This is possibly on the more difficult side, but this one came to me as I was falling asleep last night, so I thought I'd write it up. Enjoy! And don't forget to explain your reasoning!

@AtTheBenchtop – I saw a short you did on YouTube about a game you are developing that is like scrabble, but with chemical symbols. Just wanted to let you know that I have published (what I believe to be) the only exhaustive list of such "chemical words" using official game dictionaries. There are 44,313 words listed (with 93,604 distinct spellings), and you can access the list here: nandor.org/math/chemwords…

I dunno. I mean, it just says "pizza," and I'm guessing the kids all get approximately the same size of pizza in the cafeteria. It could be worded WAY better for an elementary school audience. How about, "4/6 of the pizza he bought" and "5/6 of the pizza he bought." I taught high school math for 20 years, and was in charge of math curriculum for the entire school (it was a private, pre-k through 12 school) for five years. I've seen scores of elementary school math books, and in my ever so humble opinion, this problem is very poorly worded, no matter what the intent behind it is.

@USDescartes @Math_files It's not that bad even for elementary school, it all depends on if they taught the kids what a fraction is supposed to represent, where example of similar scenarios could have been used.

@Math_files Your are my language of love! (A la Galileo's famous quote) Or possibly: You are my x² + y² - 1 = x²y³ (heart curve) But you forgot Physics: You are dynamic, or You are my power, or You're whom I am attracted to, or You are my Big Bang, or You are whom I am fused to, &c.

There are three logical answers: A. 52 – "I" enter the room (making the total 51), then the killer "walks in" (making the total 52). B. 22 – If we are only counting those still alive "thus having personhood rights." C. 30 – If by "still" we mean "not moving at all," it's the number of dead people. "I" cannot be the killer, because "I" had already walked in before the statement "A killer walks in." If we want to split hairs about not knowing if those killed are thrown out of the room, or if the other 20 (or 20 and you) people ran out of the room scared, or anything similar, there cannot be a solidly good answer and the puzzle makes no sense.

No one responded, but for those who were wondering: the answer is E. A good translation of what the angel chorus SAID is B. But "chorus" is the angelic equivalent of, say, "regiment" or "squad" – it's a military designation. Think of a huge "chorus" of angels chanting answer B!

Okay, second/last question: Ignoring translation variance, what did the angel chorus sing to the shepherds in the field on the first Christmas night? A) "Noel, Noel!" B) "Glory to God in the highest! Peace to men!" C) "Fa-la-la-la-la!" D) Something else E) None of the above

I don't care about either team. The coach may have been slightly harsh, but to a basketball player (or basketball coach), that was an obvious hip-check. Did he take a swipe at the ball? Sort of. He did his best at going for the ball while hip-checking him. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Here's your annual reminder that today is NOT Presidents' Day for most of the country! Today is Washington's Birthday (Federally), and only eleven states call today Presidents' (or Presidents or shudder President's) Day. Find the list here: nandor.org/mj/presidents/…

@pickover My response would be: what do you mean "value?" Don't you mean "values?" Because there are infinitely many values x could have!

Mathematics. Real Numbers. You are at a romantic candlelit dinner. Your partner whispers, "Have you ever wondered what value x might have in x³ = 3^x?" What is your response?

Hi folks. Still suffering many-a-malody, but I heard an incorrect answer to the following question, so I'm wondering how many of you out there know the correct answer! In the song Jingle Bells, what is the name of the horse? Hint – the answer is NOT Bobtail!

The next number is 50. We could just as well define the rule as 50 + (n mod 4), beginning with n = 0.🙂

@RHSTUDYZONE 7: it's the sum of the digits of the positive perfect squares. Since the next perfect square is 16, the sum of its digits is 7. The sequence goes: 1, 4, 9, 7, 7, 9, 13, 10, 9, 1, 4, 9, 16, 16, 9, ....

@WhiteHouse The community note is bizarre. Of COURSE China's tariffs on US goods isn't 67% – but that's what it says right on the graphic! It's tariffs AND currency manipulation AND trade barriers. I don't vouch for the numbers, but does the community note author read before typing‽‽‽

Well, as you all know, for most of the country today is NOT "Presidents Day" or something silly like that. nandor.org/mj/presidents/…. What IS today is a surgery to remove some/most/all of my Right Upper Lung and a wedge of my Right Lower Lung... and maybe even some of my Right Middle Lung. You see, I've got this thing that 5000-ish people in the USA have called Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia (COP). Since last March, it is basically stayed the same size, or maybe even increased, so it's time to cut it out. Check-in time at the hospital is two hours from now and the surgery should begin in about four hours (12:30 UTC). The bad news is that they'll remove an non-insignificant amount of my right lung. The good news is that they will be able to see inside the COP to determine if there is cancer hidden inside there. Plus, much of my worth to humanity is my ability to sing, which I have not been able to do effectively for the last year or so, and after the removable of some amount of lung, I'll be able to begin work building up the right lung again. If you are in any way religious, your prayers are appreciated! If not, your thoughts pointing my my way are appreciated. I'll take all kinds of help. I'll give a post-op post some time in the next few days to let y'all know how things went. If things go poorly, God bless you all, and keep on Mathin'!

As of 4:35pm EST today, my beautiful wife Valerie and I have been married for exactly 30 years. Have they all been pleasant? Of course not! If nothing else, she has had to put up with my mystery pain since 2012, my gigantic right lung mass since March, and my hand/elbow/knee tremors for the last few months. But y'all better believe that she has stood by me this whole time with her whole being. I wish more people would understand that marriage is a contract: of COURSE we haven't been happy for 30 years! But we have LOVED and have been DEVOTED to each other for 30 years. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful helpmeet for the last 30+ years of my life. Valerie: I can't say that I want *another* 30 years, given all of my health issues, but however long we have together, be it one more year or 50, is a gift from God. I love you so very much.

Given geogebra, wolframalpha, and desmos, the answer is undeniably (a). The real question is whether that's a good thing or not. If we don't care whether Rachel Zegler is of Puerto Rico of decent or not (her accent is even CLOSE to Puerto Rican, by the way), then we shouldn't care if people can just type these things into those kinds of math engines to get the answer or not. On the other hand, if we care whether people actually understand math or not, the answer is definitely (b), and it 100% matters whether people can do math or not. By the way: the TRUE question should be whether someone can find the correct answer can be found if the answer can be Complex! That is the MUCH more relevant question, and the one anyone who knows anything about math should be interested in. (I do know why you're asking the question, and I am NOT crapping over your question and how relevant your question is! But I still think the better question is whether someone knows the full-blown answer, including x∈ℂ, is x=2 + iπk/(ln 2), k∈ℤ).

Solve for x, where x is a real number. Which of the following do you agree with, assuming people are selected at random on Earth to solve with pencil and paper? a) Fewer than 1 in a 10,000 people could solve this. b) More than 1 in a 10,000 people could solve this.

@MYosefnia @twarrestrial @JohnsonFido I will add, not as a goodbye, but as is much as I can easily say in a single post, that I WISH I could be on 𝕏 as often I used to be!! Thank you for your support, and I'll be back often as I CAN be in the near future, when I'm not working on AI training....

@MYosefnia @twarrestrial @JohnsonFido At the moment, though, since training AIs how to do better at math and physics is an actual paying gig that can leave my wife and kids some money to leave if I die, I'm forced to do that more than working on 𝕏! However, I'll be back as often as I think is reasonable....
