But when its a global sport and people have choice, it’s not going to work well.
And in leagues with relegation, not spending can get you relegated and hurt your team’s value.

The biggest challenge MLS has over the next 5-10 years to win over the millions of American 🇺🇸 soccer fans that don’t care about the league. The “sign a star” gimmick won’t work. They also won’t choose MLS in terms of quality when they have at least 5 other leagues with better quality on the field. That leaves MLS with bringing them in due to some personal connection, which is tough. You can’t say “support local” and force people to buy into a very “corporate league”. Liga Mx 🇲🇽 ain’t better than MLS but Mexican Americans have a personal connection to it, which is why it has more viewers than MLS in the 🇺🇸 So how does MLS solve this?

@USMNTTruth anyways, the main reason the EPL works is because they evenly distribute TV money, unlike other European leagues who hand it out to the top clubs disproportionately.
Even rev share is good. Local clubs still run their local ops and 75% their revenue is local.

That conservatism is not needed anymore today. Interest is here, the capital is here, and those willing to take risks I’m sure are here. But they can’t because the marquee league isn’t structured in a way that allows for risk taking.

My honest opinion, the people not watching for “quality” is a very niche group. The bigger issue is soccer has just really taken off here in the past 5 years, even still being a secondary sport. In Mexico it is #1 by far, Mexican Americans are born into ⚽️ culture. MLS is playing catch up. If teams could spend more money that would help a lot to the casual fan. The other issue is the many markets left untapped
