As a premise, when we were developing Hard Battle, Street Fighter II was already out in arcades, but it hadn’t yet been released for home consoles. My starting point was that the people buying a Ranma game were Ranma fans—not fighting game enthusiasts. In fact, we once received a survey postcard from an 8-year-old saying they couldn’t beat the first opponent in the previous game (Neighborhood Combat Edition), so I selected and balanced the in-game characters with that kind of player in mind. Characters like Gosunkugi and King, who are obviously weak, were meant to be easy for beginners to defeat while still being appealing in their own ways. Since home versions of Street Fighter II weren’t available yet, I thought it would be better to design the controls with a character-driven action game mindset rather than relying on fighting game conventions. For example, the double jump ability of Girl Ranma and Shampoo wasn’t inspired by fighting games, but rather by classic action platformers. That’s one reason why the control system in Hard Battle feels unique. At the same time, I anticipated that once Street Fighter II was released on home consoles, players might approach the game expecting similar mechanics—so I also included a key configuration option that allowed them to set up their buttons like Street Fighter II. My goal was to create a game that both beginners and experienced players could enjoy.
