This weekend, the streets of East London came alive as the HOKA Hackney Half headlined the HOKA Hackney Moves festival, marking the beginning of a new era for London’s biggest and most in-demand half marathon. More than 27,000 runners signed up for the sold-out event on Sunday 17 May, with participants experiencing the electric atmosphere that defines Hackney, passing iconic landmarks including Hackney Town Hall, Mare Street, Hackney Wick and Victoria Park, before finishing in front of roaring crowds at Hackney Marshes. HOKA Hackney Half was officially started by Mayor of Hackney, Zoë Garbett, while the HOKA Hackney 5k was started by Cllr Dylan Law, Deputy Mayor of Hackney and Cabinet Member for Safer Homes and Housing Services. The first finisher for the HOKA Hackney Half was Sam Tyas (01:06:35), followed by Chris Bruchhausen (01:07:09) and Oliver Way (01:07:29). Ciara Boyd-Squires Long was the fastest female to cross the line (01:14:54), closely followed by Tessa McCormick (01:14:58) and last year’s fastest female Becky Briggs finished in 01:16:49. Celebrity runners included Made in Chelsea’s Sam Thompson, broadcaster Clara Amfo, comedian Elis James and Married at First Sight star Leah Marie Tyrer. Across the weekend, the HOKA Hackney Moves festival welcomed over 60,000 people to a celebration of fitness, music and community, with live performances, workouts, and cultural moments showcasing the very best of East London. One of the highlights of the multi-day festival was a surprise performance by renowned DJ Norman Jay MBE. The 2026 edition marked the first year of HOKA as title partner, building on a long-standing relationship and shared commitment to the power of movement and community. At the heart of HOKA Hackney Moves remains its industry-leading community programme, which returned bigger than ever in 2026. The Hackney Academy, a 12-week initiative providing free coaching, kit and race entry, supported 50 runners from Hackney and surrounding boroughs, many of whom crossed the finish line of their first-ever half marathon this weekend. More than 40 local community organisations and over 60 Community Champions were integrated into the event, ensuring the festival continues to be shaped by, and representative of, the borough it calls home. The festival also saw the return of the free Hackney Community 5K on Saturday, alongside an expanded schools’ challenge, allowing thousands of young people to complete their own half marathon journey and cross the iconic finish line. Thousands of runners took on the HOKA Hackney Half in support of charitable causes, helping raise over £4m for the event’s official charity partners. This year, the event proudly supported Single Homeless Project as its Headline Charity Partner, alongside a wide range of national and local charities, continuing the event’s track record of generating millions in fundraising each year. The weekend reinforced HOKA Hackney Moves as far more than a race, a cultural moment celebrating the borough’s diversity, creativity and spirit. Ian Allerton, Managing Director, Motiv Sports UK, said: “We’re incredibly proud to see the HOKA Hackney Half and HOKA Hackney Moves continue to grow as a celebration of everything that makes this community so special. Big thank you to the runners, community and everyone involved. “From elite runners chasing times, fundraisers supporting powerful causes, to first-timers crossing the finish line, and from our community partners to the thousands of supporters lining the streets, this weekend truly captured the spirit of Hackney. “With HOKA as our title partner, we’re excited to keep building on this momentum and creating even more opportunities for people to experience the joy of movement.” For runners looking to take part in the 2027 HOKA Hackney Half, entries go on sale today, Monday 18 May. 📷 Credit: Motiv Sports

The Women’s course record has been broken at the Barry Island 10K once again. A new course record was set in the women’s race by Charlotte Taylor from Bristol & West AC with a time of 33:08. The title was previously held by Natasha Wilson who ran 34:21 last year. Taylor, who is planning to run some more road 10Ks over the summer and will be targeting the marathon distance later in the year, said: “Today’s been really good, I really enjoyed the run. I’ve been doing some longer races recently, so it was nice to have something a bit faster and blow out over 10K. There were lots of people out cheering, the atmosphere was good. I knew there were some hills, but I felt strong on those, and I really liked the coastal part of the course too.” Swansea Harriers, Jon Butler, was the winner in the men’s race, claiming the title with a time of 30:23 and in the wheelchair event, local man Ron Price took the crown in 53:37. Butler said: “It was good I’m really pleased. I ran a good solid time, the quickest I’ve done here in three attempts, and I ran most of it on my own, so I’m happy with it. The race was brilliant; there were crowds everywhere and that makes a really big difference. It was really well supported and that gives you that little bit extra.” Price, who is from the area and knows the hills of Barry well, added: “The hills are tough – they’re always tough in a racing chair because we’ve got no gearing, but other than that, it was a good event, well organised and the weather stayed on our side. The crowds were good and there was lots of support from the runners along the way too, as I tend to slow down going up the hills and then overtake them on the way down. It was a good event.” This year saw the largest ever Barry Island 10K descend onto the iconic seaside time for a full Welsh festival of running. More than 4,700 participants registered to take part across both the 10K and junior races, taking in the town’s most iconic spots including Whitmore Bay, the Knap, Romilly Park and Watch House Bay. It was an event extravaganza as the race partnered with Welsh music, culture and arts festival Gŵyl Fach y Fro, for the first time this year. It meant performances were scheduled for both the Saturday and Sunday as runners and spectators took in all the sights and delights of the seafront. After the 10K race it was then onto the Junior races which included an adorable 50m toddler dash on the promenade, as well as a Future Challengers mile for competitive young athletes and a Family Fun Run to allow all ages and abilities to get involved. For the second time, Cancer Research Wales took the spot as the event’s lead charity with a team of 125 runners taking on the course to raise money for the charity. The charity also collected discarded clothing left at the start-line to give a new lease of life to in its shops and offered massages to weary runners for a donation at their stand in the event village. The 2027 Barry Island 10K takes place on Sunday 16 May next year and entries are now open. An early bird offer, giving a £6 saving against general entry, is available for the first 500 people to register. RESULTS Women’s race: 1. Charlotte Taylor: 33:08 2. Olivia Stillman: 36:27 3. Donna Morris: 36:33 4. Georgia Palmer:36:36 5. Olivia Tsim: 38:07 Men’s race: 1. Jon Butler: 30:23 2. Adam Bowden: 32:12 3. Matt Verran: 32:17 4. Sam Griffiths: 33:19 5. The closer I get to this 10k race, the more I realise that running will never be a hobby I truly enjoy. I'm literally just dragging my ass out every week so I don't look like a complete lemon on the day 😬. @UKRunChat
